Firefox 46 html5 videos not working properly

Hi

In fedora 24, firefox 46 stopped playing some html5 videos. Youtube seems to be working, but others like videos on Twitter show "This browser does not support video playback.".

I have flash installed but in the links that aren't working the page is not even trying to load the flash plugin, so it's not a flash issue.

On https://html5test.com/ I get 476 out of 555 points, with:
Audio track selection: No
Video track selection: No
MPEG-4 ASP support: No
H.264 support: No
AAC support: No
MP3 support: No

I have installed gstreamer1-libav and gstreamer-ffmpeg. Any ideas?

Try going into the about:config page in Firefox and set all these to true

media.mediasource.enabled
media.mediasource.mp4.enabled
media.mediasource.webm.audio.enabled
media.mediasource.webm.enabled

I have the same problem. My FF settings were already at true. At the extreme right is a set of horizonatal bars.
Open up, proceed to customize , click on the questionmark, and click onto "Submit Feedback"

I've just checked, firefox 45 (firefox-45.0.2-4.fc24.x86_64) works fine. Firefox 46 (firefox-46.0-5.fc24.x86_64) doesn't. H.264 support, MP3 support & AAC support aren't working.

Try enabling the "OpenH264 Video Codec provided by Cisco Systems" plugin

I don't think the OpenH264 codec is used for web videos, but is instead only used for WebRTC (for now).
For what's it worth, my Firefox still works fine (i.e. H.264 works fine).
Is media.ffmpeg.enabled set to true?

Wait you are using FC24. I'm talking about FC23. You could be hitting some bug.

Yes. It was in Firefox 45 and it's still enabled for 46.

FWIW, I've been seeing more "your browser can't play this video..." notices, both Flash and non-Flash, in Firefox recently.

46.1 was out yesterday.

My guess is that Firefox 45 is built against gstreamer 1.6.x, whereas Firefox 46 is now using gstreamer 1.8.x, and rpmfusion was providing either 1.4.x or 1.6.x (I can only find files for 1.4.x, but their specs are set for 1.6.3).

The good news is that, by grabbing the spec files from https://github.com/rpmfusion/gstreamer1-libav and https://github.com/rpmfusion/gstreamer1-plugins-ugly (for mp3, etc. support), I was able to build the 1.8.1 versions of these plugins by just changing the version number. If you're already set up for building RPMs, this should be easy enough.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

sudo dnf install ffmpeg-libs --allowerasing

fixed the issue. It downgraded some gstreamer1-packages from rpm-fusion.

I get a lot of black windows at Youtube telling me I need Flash to play the video. All of these are recently posted videos. This wasn't happening in F23.

It looks like gstreamer support was removed altogether from Firefox https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1331496

So for h264 one can only use ffmpeg (installing ffmpeg-libs).
