Dual booting FC3 and XP on the same hard disk or waiting to get a new hard disk and set it up that way?

What I'd like to do is dual boot on the primary disk and then when I get the new disk I can use that as a shared resource for both OS's..

Opinions?

If I were you, I would partition the master harddisk and install the both OS in the same disk and then use the slave disk as a share resource like you mentioned. That way, when you try to reformatt your master disk for whatever reason, you can always keep you important data safe in the slave disk. One last thing, I would suggest you to format your newly purchased harddisk as a fat32 filesystem instead of NTFS since linux doesn't write to ntfs natively.

You have XP already installed... installing FC3 could be tricky... Here are your options..

You could : Try to re-partition your Master disk to make space for FC3..... and leave it a unformatted partition...

You could : Reinstall XP on FAT32 and also leave unformatted space for FC3

I am not sure if XP would run on FAT32 but to check your current installation Control Panel>Administrative Tools > Computer Managment > Storage > Disk Managment.

If this is NTFS you are going to have to use some third party tool to repartition the primary HDD to make space. In my experience, this is not worth it as it take too much time and hardly ever work.

I reccomend you just bakup your mail, bookmarks and other media to CD or USB dev and re-do the box.

I found Windows 2000 and FC3 a absolute breeze to install... but good Luck on your XP

I'm certain that XP supports FAT32.

For the moment I use 2 hd's and primary for fedora, slave for xp and fat32, linux extra storage. When I had 1 hd it was for dual booting xp and fedora and an extra fat32 partition for data storage.

Well. I used partition magic to resize the master partition. I set up a 10gb part for my most important stuff then resized again and allowed 30gb for Fedora and took 2gb for a swap part..
Everthing is playing nicely together for the most part.. I am having an issue with Fedora freezing when it goes to the screen saver... But if I continue having that issue I will post it in the appropriate forum..
