    Thinkpad YOGA S1 F22 woes

I finally did go ahead un fedup'd to 22 workstation on the Thinkpad Yoga. It's a kind a disappointment so I consider reinstalling 21...

Major PITA is the machine resumes back immediately after going to sleep, approx. 4 times out of 5. Nothing useful in the logs to point what wakes it up. Or I don't know where to look.

Then an annoying one: it has an integrated wacom pen. Works nicely with xournal, pressue and al. Very handy for note taking and one of my main use cases.
The issue is that gnome freezes up to 1 second when putting your hand holding the pen down on screen to scribble. What you start writing is invisible during the freeze, then appears at once. It's a real screen freeze, not just xournal; I tested with a video window on the screen. I guess this one is on gnome's own touch detection 'cause it does not happen in kde-plasma.

The last is a mysterious one: kde-connect crashes saying "pure virtual function" although I did test from the live kde spin and it did work. I went ahead and installed plasma-workspaces over gnome, hoping to fix a possible undeclared dependency but it's still broken. At least this one has an open bug.

What annoys me most is all those are regressions from 21. I'll for sure file the first one to bugzilla, but I don't know what to do with the freeze on touch issue. Seems like a corner case that will never got fixed.

Anyway, if you got some counsel around these, fell free to express yourself.

Re: Thinkpad YOGA S1 F22 woes

Thanks so much for this post -- I'm the main developer of xournal and just installed F22 on my Yoga only to find the same issues. Glad to know I'm not dreaming.

    1. Suspend issue: I fixed this by disabling wakeup from sleep by USB-3.0 events, as found on another forum somewhere. My solution was: create /etc/rc.d/rc.local containing

    Code:
    #!/bin/sh

    # PREVENT laptop from resuming instantly upon suspend due to XHCI (USB-3.0) wakeup event
    for device in XHC
    do
        if grep -q "$device.*enabled" /proc/acpi/wakeup
        then
            echo $device > /proc/acpi/wakeup
        fi
    done
Make it executable (chmod +x /etc/rc.d/rc.local), and enable the rc-local compatibility service by running:

    systemctl enable rc-local.service

My laptop is now happy to suspend and stay suspended. However, it doesn't seem to always suspend when I close the lid, only about half the time (not sure if it's related or not) -- so watch out, and use the power button to manually suspend it if needed.

    2. Pen and touch interference: I noticed this freeze in xournal and thought "oh god, what a horrible bug", and started trying to debug it with no success. Then I noticed that my system overall was being unresponsive. Thanks for clarifying that it's a Gnome issue -- I don't have KDE on my system and wouldn't have known, my first fear was an issue with the X server or the wacom driver. Have you (or someone else) reported the bug to the Gnome Shell developers ? This seems like a major one.
I assume Gnome 3 now tries to do something with touchscreen events that it wasn't yet trying to do on F21 (perhaps preparing to have some multitouch gestures on the desktop?), and that causes the freeze? Anyway, needs to be reported. But glad to hear it's not a xournal issue.

If you are still trying to use Gnome Shell despite it, you can always temporarily disable the touchscreen during your xournal sessions:

    xinput disable "ELAN Touchscreen"

(then same with 'enable' instead of 'disable' to re-enable it). Still not ideal -- I really got addicted to scrolling with touch & writing with pen, but the display freezes are just making it unusable.

Re: Thinkpad YOGA S1 F22 woes

I found that it's not necessary to run: systemctl enable rc-local.service to have your rc.local run. If rc.local exists and it's in executable mode, it will run automatically as part of the boot up. So far as I've read, it's in systemd as a static service rather than one that needs to be controlled.

Re: Thinkpad YOGA S1 F22 woes

well, I'm glad that it helped.
I prefer KDE on my workstation but gnome fits handsomly to Yoga, with the panel-side windows button and their latest touch events. I generally keep around an alternative DE for testing this kind of bugs, openbox is a good way to see if it comes from the DE or the software itself.
Anyway, I went back to 21 (where I had to workaround also for XHC issue with the latest kernels) and did not take the time to file a bug on gnome. Actually, it maybe somethng to do with libinput stuff, as gnome 3.14 in 21 has already lots of fancy multitouch events. Ive seen the disabling touchscreen workaround but I really like your pen+touch goodness in xournal and will stick to 21 until its fixed (this and I really disliked new topside notifications)

I'd like to take this opportunity to warmly thank you for xournal, Ive been using it since my late HP tx touch and always been reliable.

    Best,

Re: Thinkpad YOGA S1 F22 woes

Okay, if like me you are desperate for a quick workaround so that you can actually use your Yoga (or other pen+touch tablet PC) under F22, there's a solution besides downgrading gnome or disabling the touchscreen entirely. I just wrote a small tool that disables the touchscreen when the wacom pen reports proximity to the screen. It's only had a few hours of testing so far, so use at your own risk.

    math.berkeley.edu/~auroux/software/xnohands.tar.gz
(installation instructions for common use scenario are included in README file)

This doesn't fix the underlying gnome-shell issue, of course, and you'll still notice gnome-shell freezing the display when using the touchscreen and a touchpad/mouse/... (anything other than a wacom pen, really) at the same time -- but I don't see any compelling reason to want to do so.

Also, I've reported the gnome-shell bug at the Gnome bugzilla (id 753527) (no response so far).

Re: Thinkpad YOGA S1 F22 woes

I'm having the same issue of gnome not suspending on closing the lid on my t550 running fedora22
Works fine manually with the button or disabling power saving optimizations (i.e. tlp false)
