"Mostly a lot of small fixes since 2.6.10-rc3, with the biggest thing being probably the CIFS update and the switch-over to the new DVB frontend driver world order. Some MMC and USB work too, and ARM updates as usual."
2.6.10-rc3 - story
I compiled it on the 25th with my 2.6.9 config file, compiled cleanly, and runs stable. I have to modprobe nvidia and unplug and plug back in my scanner to use them, but I don't know if those are kernel related bugs.
I am new to linux and I need to learn how to compile a new kernel, I am using Fedora Core 3.
Go to kernel.org, download the latest kernel, untar it to the /usr/src/linux-2.6.10.
As a user:
make oldconfig
make menuconfig
make
As root:
make modules_install
make install
Restart, choose it in grub at boot, or edit your grub.conf file to have it as the default kernel.
I downloaded the following file: patch-2.6.10.bz2 and it is about 4.6MB is it the correct file ?
No, you want the full source code. I believe you click on the F next to it, and I believe it wa 30 some megs. Are you on dial up?
No I am not on dialup, Is the grub file located under /boot or not and please can u tell me how to edit it or any usefull links, thanks
The only thing you would have to change in grub is the default kernel from 1 to 0. It is usually located in /etc
this a copy of my grub.conf file:
# grub.conf generated by anaconda
#
# Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file
# NOTICE: You do not have a /boot partition. This means that
# all kernel and initrd paths are relative to /, eg.
# root (hd0,1)
# kernel /boot/vmlinuz-version ro root=/dev/sda2
# initrd /boot/initrd-version.img
#boot=/dev/sda
default=2
timeout=5
splashimage=(hd0,1)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz
hiddenmenu
title Fedora Core (2.6.9-1.667smp)
root (hd0,1)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.9-1.667smp ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb quiet
initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.9-1.667smp.img
title Fedora Core-up (2.6.9-1.667)
root (hd0,1)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.9-1.667 ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb quiet
initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.9-1.667.img
title Windows XP
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
chainloader +1
What do u suggest to change ?
Did you install the new kernel?
No not yet, since this is a critical issue i need all things to be clear before i start such a step.
