Exclamation Fedora 20: Hardware Disabled, Wifi not working

I'm running Fedora 20 with dual boot on a HP 15e016tx Laptop. Wireless card is a Ralink RT3290 Card.

Recently, I noticed that the wifi shows hardware disabled and the airplane mode is always activated. This problem started unexpectedly after I was using the wifi adapter (inbuilt) to create a wireless hotspot. It was working fine until recently.

While booting into Windows 8, I'm able to use the wi-fi without any hiccups. It activates and deactivates without any problem and Im able to access networks.

Meanwhile, I've tried reinstalling Fedora and it doesnt seem to help the issue. Many people have suggested rfkill and this is the result.

    [gsrinivas@localhost ~]$ rfkill list
    0: phy0: Wireless LAN
    Soft blocked: no
    Hard blocked: yes
    [gsrinivas@localhost ~]$ rfkill list
    0: phy0: Wireless LAN
    Soft blocked: yes
    Hard blocked: yes
    [gsrinivas@localhost ~]$ rfkill list
    0: phy0: Wireless LAN
    Soft blocked: no
    Hard blocked: yes
    [gsrinivas@localhost ~]$ rfkill unblock all
    [gsrinivas@localhost ~]$ rfkill list
    0: phy0: Wireless LAN
    Soft blocked: no
    Hard blocked: yes

Toggling the wireless switch on my keyboard only seems to make the soft block go away. The hard block is Still active and the airplane mode never seems to be turning off.

I've also tried using modprobe and that doesnt seem to be of any help.
I dont need the Airplane mode feature and if there is a way of disabling that feature and making my wifi work, please do tell.

    Thanks in advance.

Re: Fedora 20: Hardware Disabled, Wifi not working

I also found this issue on many laptops installed with Fedora 20. This is what i found on the net but not tried yet:

    .............

This was how i fixed it on my laptop:

Applications Menu > System Tools > Preferences > System Settings

ok Now from here I opened "Network" and while the window is open I could see that my "Airplane Mode" switch was toggled on AND PERSISTENTLY ON.

Toggle Airplane OFF and while the window is still open and in place, PRESS YOUR PHYSICAL STANDBY/POWER BUTTON

The system will go to standby. Now resume the system and toggle your wifi button. It seems there is a glitch in the system. who would have thought >.

    .............

    @Colors

Tried that method. When I did put my laptop on suspend, It did not switch on.

And on rebooting, there is no change in the wifi status. The Airplane mode simply refuses to go off.

    Any other ideas?

A shot in the dark, turn off the machine and unplug the power cable and battery, wait a while then connect it back and boot directly to Fedora, see if wifi works or not.

Re: Fedora 20: Hardware Disabled, Wifi not working

At mzar720, you should probably open a new thread as the mods feel this is about an end of version.

I suppose changing the title to something like RT3290 not working properly since F20 and leaving it in place is an alternate solution.
    Anyway....
These forums are just users helping users. The best way to request a fix is to open a bugzilla report, or see if there is one already open for F24--obviously, with all the bugs that might occur, generally, if something doesn't get resolved in a version, such as F20, the bug will be closed with a note that it can be reopened for the next version.

To open a bug, if you're not familiar with it, go to bugzilla.redhat.com (You will have to create an account).
