Update System to CORE 3 x86_64 from CORE 3 x86.

Hello All,

I currently have CORE 3 x86 installed and running on a 64 bit system (Sun W1100 w/ AMD Opteron).

Is it possible to UPGRADE to CORE 3 x86_64 without doing a fresh install?

I'd like to keep my current user accounts and user data.

Thanks in advance.

Pete

personally, I wouldn't do that since x86_64 version still has many bugs and causes probems even after clean install e.g. flash plugin crashes on 64bit version of firefox, xmms segfault when using alsa driver as an ouput , tux racer segfault and other issues that I didn't have with i386 version.

There is no 64bit plugin for Flash, so if you are trying to MAKE it use the 32bit plugin, it's no wonder it crashes.

XMMS works fine with ALSA here. I prefer the ALSA driver as the other outputs are noisy. ALSA did get updated a week ago. Maybe that would have fixed your problem.

Never had a problem with tuxracer. It's pretty fun. Maybe your 3D isn't configured correctly. When people report tuxracer segfaulting, they usually have installed proprietary drivers, but forgotten to uninstall MESA. The mix of the two causes all kinds of problems.

However, I'm not going to say 64bit is perfect. In my case, the 64bit version of xine won't read files; I use the 32bit verison which works great. Also, gentoo (the file manager) doesn't sense when directories change. Also, Cedega/WineX doesn't work for me at all. WINE works rather well, though, so I get by. Finally, DOOM3 (latest version with ALSA support) doesn't work with ALSA for me. It works fine with OSS though.

EDIT: Actually, I did just find the problem getting ALSA to work with DOOM3. You need to do "modprobe snd-ioctl32" before running DOOM3, or add it to /etc/rc.local to have it done automatically when you start your system.

Yes, I am aware of that and that's why I use 32 bit version. However it's still a flaw since by default 64bit version of firefox is installed and without googling it is hard to find the cause.

XMMS 64bit version works ok with ALSA for me, however I am forced to use 32bit version, that works only with OSS, because there is no 64bit MPlayer which depends on XMMS lib.

Here you might be right because I didn't uninstall MESA. I'll give it a try.

On the other hand, I don't have any troubles with 64bit Xine except for that it doesn't play WMV, and Quicktime and other windows-specific formats (Win32 codecs installed), but MPlayer (unfortunately only 32bit version is avaialable) works greaat here with its mozilla-plugin.

I don't use gentoo so I can't take position in that. In contrast, Cedega 4.2 works quite well for me and I didn't notice any serious problems with WINE. Did you disable prelinking? If not edit /etc/sysconfig/prelink and set:
PRELINKING=no
PRELINK_OPTS=-mR-no-exec-shield

and then execute prelink -ua

That solved most of problems that I was getiing with Cedega. Also if you use point2play and had any trouble with that then try point2play-small which works ok for me. I also had a problem with Doom3 and ALSA, so thanks for solution.
Finally, had some issues with too much performance in some games on my system . See this thread for deatils. Maybe the installed MESA was the cause.. I'll check. Thanks
