Can't turn off modem speaker

I'm having problems geting the speaker to turn off. I have it dialing up and connecting fine. I have the modem volume turned off in the configure dialog box yet it still makes noise. Is there a conf file that I can manualy put in the M0 at command? In the past I have been able to get wvdial to trun it off, I've tried to put the M0 in the wvdial.conf file with no luck.

Thanks

Open a terminal and enter
Code:
system-config-network
In here try configuring your modem. I forget if it's done in the Devices tab or the Hardware tab, but I remember being able to disable modem sound using this utility. Just check the various properties. You should see the option.

It's been a while since I have used a modem, but in the network settings above there should be an option to add an extra string to the modem initialization line, add "ATM0" (<<<<that's a "zero") the "AT" command means get modem attention, "M" is speaker volumn, "0" is off.

This is the standard Hayes AT command set. (should work, but no warranty on my part )!
some modem manufacturers ignored the Hayes "standard", if it doesn't work, check your modem's documentation, it's in there somewhere..

Hope that helped....
