Yum update problem

Hi all, first post here and new to linux so please bear with me

Ive tried to use yum for the first time and unfortunately came up with a problem :

xorg-x11-xauth-6.8.1-12.F 100% |=========================| 234 kB 00:01
---> Package xorg-x11-xauth.x86_64 0:6.8.1-12.FC3.21 set to be updated
---> Downloading header for gnumeric to pack into transaction set.
gnumeric-1.2.13-8.fc3.x86 100% |=========================| 110 kB 00:00
---> Package gnumeric.x86_64 1:1.2.13-8.fc3 set to be updated
---> Downloading header for gamin to pack into transaction set.
gamin-0.0.17-1.FC3.x86_64 100% |=========================| 7.5 kB 00:00
---> Package gamin.x86_64 0:0.0.17-1.FC3 set to be updated
--> Running transaction check
--> Processing Dependency: libfam.so.0 for package: gnome-vfs2
--> Finished Dependency Resolution
Error: Missing Dependency: libfam.so.0 is needed by package gnome-vfs2

I really have no idea what libfam.so.0 is and was wondering if anyone could help me out.

The reason I chose to put this in the 64 forum is that searching through google I came accross another person with the same problem (unforunately no solution) and it was found that I have 2 packages of gnome-vfs2 (one 32 and one 64). Maybe this could be part of the problem?

Thank you for your quick replys

1. Ive installed Yum Extender and while it is a great utility and ill use it in the future, unfortunately the same problem has reared its ugly head.

2. Ive tried different setups in the past and havent worked. When I updated the files recommended in your link, yum now comes up with

[root@paulinux paul]# yum update
Repository atrpms-stable already added, not adding again
Repository updates-released already added, not adding again
Repository base already added, not adding again
Repository freshrpms already added, not adding again
Repository livna-unstable already added, not adding again
Config Error: Insufficient repository configuration. No repositories Found/Enabled. Aborting.

For extra info which may help, here is my /etc/yum.conf file now that it has been updated -

[main]
cachedir=/var/cache/yum
debuglevel=2
logfile=/var/log/yum.log
pkgpolicy=newest
distroverpkg=redhat-release
tolerant=1
exactarch=1
retries=20
obsoletes=1
gpgcheck=1

# PUT YOUR REPOS HERE OR IN separate files named file.repo
# in /etc/yum.repos.d

mirrorlist=http://fedora.redhat.com/download/mirrors/fedora-core-$releasever

Okay, you've certainly got them all - now check your /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora.repo and see if it looks like this:
[base]
name=Fedora Core $releasever - $basearch - Base
#baseurl=http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/$releasever/$ba
search/os/
mirrorlist=http://fedora.redhat.com/download/mirrors/fedora-core-$releasever
enabled=1
gpgcheck=1

What I think is happening here is that all repositories are commented as 'enabled=0' which would bypass them.

Here is my fedora.repo :

[base]
name=Fedora Core $releasever - $basearch - Base
#baseurl=http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/$releasever/$basearch/os/
mirrorlist=http://fedora.redhat.com/download/mirrors/fedora-core-$releasever
enabled=1
gpgcheck=1

Oddly enough, when I remove every thing below the line
# PUT YOUR REPOS HERE OR IN separate files named file.repo
# in /etc/yum.repos.d

in my yum.conf file, it gets past the second problem, but still comes up with the original missing file problem

Yowch! Very strange! Have you tried to put this yum.conf aside by renaming it temporarily to something like yum-alt.conf and substituting the yum.conf here: http://www.fedorafaq.org/samples/yum.conf ?
It might cause a batch of 'livna (etc) already added, not adding again' but should at least work.

Ive just got passed my second problem. In the yum.conf file (the one i downloaded in the link), under [base] and [updates-released], both where enabled=0, so I changed to enabled=1 and now, even though the same not adding again lines are coming, it now doesnt stop at the Config Error: Insufficient repository configuration. No repositories Found/Enabled. Aborting. line.

Unfortunately I am still stuck with the original libfam.so.0 problem

Ive now tried your yum.conf file and it spouts out :

[root@paulinux etc]# yum check-update
Repository atrpms-bleeding already added, not adding again
Repository atrpms-testing already added, not adding again
Repository atrpms-stable already added, not adding again
Repository dag already added, not adding again
Repository dries already added, not adding again
Repository flash already added, not adding again
Repository freshrpms already added, not adding again
Repository freshrpms already added, not adding again
Repository jpackage-fedora already added, not adding again
Repository jpackage-generic already added, not adding again
Repository livna-stable already added, not adding again
Repository livna-testing already added, not adding again
Repository livna-unstable already added, not adding again
Repository livna-unstable already added, not adding again
Setting up Repo: livna-stable
Cannot open/read repomd.xml file for repository: livna-stable
failure: repodata/repomd.xml from livna-stable: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try.

My other updated update=1 yum.conf file seems to work now though.

Well congrats on the yum.conf problem! So, have you tried to see if you have libfam.so.0 already installed? On my box, 'whereis libfam.so.0' returns 'libfam.so: /usr/lib/libfam.so.0 /usr/lib/libfam.so'
Have you checked 'add/remove applications' - Gnome Desktop Environment (details) to see if gnome-vfs2-smb is installed?

BTW, here's my yum.conf
[main]
cachedir=/var/cache/yum
debuglevel=2
logfile=/var/log/yum.log
pkgpolicy=newest
distroverpkg=redhat-release
tolerant=1
exactarch=1
retries=20
obsoletes=1
gpgcheck=1

# PUT YOUR REPOS HERE OR IN separate files named file.repo
# in /etc/yum.repos.d

As you can see, the 'base' and 'updates released' are not even mentioned on the yum.conf as yum extender picks them up from the repos.d as automatically enabled. FC3 is creating quite a few different ways to work through yum - there's the yum.conf that you posted which is mentioned in Imdeemvp's thread, the yum.conf that I mentioned which is part of the Unofficial FAQ, the yum.conf that I'm using as part of yum extender and there's also GYUM, which I haven't even touched. Funny thing is that with MY problem today, Synaptic was the solution when yum couldn't solve it. Oh well...

Really useful command 'whereis'. Ive just typed in whereis libfam.so.0 and here are the results :

[root@paulinux /]# whereis libfam.so.0
libfam.so:
[root@paulinux /]#

So it seems its not installed on my system. Do you know where I can get it?
Regarding whether gnome-vfs2-smb is installed, it is in my Add/Remove Programs list, where it is checked.

Something extra i found on the web, someone else had the same problem at http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedor.../msg06795.html. When typing in rpm -q gnome-vfs2 --qf %{NAME}-%{ARCH}\\n it came out with :

gnome-vfs2-i386
gnome-vfs2-x86_64

Will having 2 gnome-vfs2 packages make any difference?

Yep, from what I can find, it should have been included with gnome-vfs2 and I've found gnome-vfs2-devel-2.8.2-8.i386.rpm
on FC3, disk 3 which may solve it.
