A Theme for E16 -- Fedora Blued Glass

Let me start by saying this is a work in progress.

It's also something that maybe fifty people will ever see, a half dozen will actually try, maybe only two will ever likely use. I realize that. But I'm putting it up here anyway. Such is the nature of open source. If the Gnome-Gnuts can do it ... so can I. <....>

For the purposes of this thread/tutorial there will be some nominal ...

    Conventions:

    • <....>Items marked with a caution symbol need careful attention.
    • <....>Items marked with a stop sign should not be done.
    • <....>Items marked with a question mark are items subject to personal discretion and taste.

    and ...

    Mandatory Cautions and Warnings
    • Make back up copies of any and all files and folders you'll be working with before you edit or replace them. I will only mention this once, here. After that, you are on your own.
    • Caveat Emptor. Install and use this at your own risk. It works for me, but your results may vary.
    • The current documentation in e16 is out of date. It was written around version 0.6.x, and the version in the fedora repos is 1.0.11. I am updating that documentation as I go, but it s also a work in progress.
    • If you're not overly fond of the color blue, this will never be a favorite for you.
    • At least one operation listed here may effect other DE/WMs. It will be marked as such. These are all just inconvenienced electrons, so I recommend trying it at least once, and then reverting the change before loging back into that other Gnormal fedora desktop environment. If you don't use that other Gnasty thing, and you like the added color ... meh. I'd just leave the change there until you find a real good reason to reverse it.

    and ...

    Pre-requisites

    • An installed copy of e16
    • A working non-Gnome* file manager (Thunar/PCmanFM etc.)
    • A terminal
    • Some basic terminal skills.
    • Root/sudo Access
*You can use nautilus/caja IF you start then from a terminal with the "--no-desktop" switch. <....>

    and ...

    Resources:

    The Fedora Blued Glass Theme:
    The Gkrellm2 theme:
    The GTK-2.0 theme:

Before this is all over we will be replacing or editing or adding files in the following directories.

    Code:
    /home/(your home directory)/.e16/themes/
    /home/(your home directory)/.gkrellm2/themes/
    <....> /usr/share/themes/Adwaita/gtk-2.0

    Initial setup:

Download the theme itself, and unpack it into:
    Code:
    /home/(your home directory)/.e16/themes/
Download the Gkrellm2 theme and unpack it into:
    Code:
    /home/(your home directory)/.gkrellm2/themes/
The next two steps are optional, and may have consequences for your Gnome sessions. Both are quite easily reversible, but if in doubt, skip these two steps.

<....> As root: Open a file browser and drill down to:
    Code:
    /usr/share/themes/Adwaita/
Rename the existing "gtk-2.0" folder to "BU-gtk-2.0".

<....> Download and unpack the new gtk-2.0 theme into
    Code:
    /usr/share/themes/Adwaita/
thus replacing the original, but leaving the backup file intact.

    Lighting off the burners.

Once all that is done, it's time! Start or re-start e16. Then use the right click menu to select the theme, "fedora blued glass".

If all went according to plan, after a few seconds of winding clock, the theme should change. I'll let you figure out how to change the theme in Gkrellm. For right now, though, let me guide you to the other stuff you may need or want.

In a file browser (Thunar is my choice) surf nto:
    Code:
    .e16/themes/fedora-blued-glass/
and note two files of interest.

    • READ_ME_FIRST
    • HELP.

Pretty much follow the breadcrumbs from there. Click on READ_ME_FIRST, and that should bring you up to speed on the rest.

The HELP link is also clickable, and is the new documentation I've completed so far.

Theme wallpapers (for F18 - Spherical cow)

So that's about it. I've used serif fonts because with my eyes, I can see them best. There's instructions in the READ_ME_FIRST to change that to taste, or just hit the last e16 intro thread I did and follow the bread crumbs there.

Have fun exploring your choices. That's a whole lot of what Linux is all about.

Re: A Theme for E16 -- Fedora Blued Glass

I find it handy to edit my user menus and add these.

    Code:
"READ_ME" NULL exec "(insert appropriate path here)READ_ME_FIRST"
"NEW_DOCS" NULL exec "(insert appropriate path here)HELP"

EDIT: Once I've finished updating the help file graphics, I'll re-format that whole document. It kinda needs it. Bigger fonts anyway.

Re: A Theme for E16 -- Fedora Blued Glass

It happened!....after awhile.... Danged zip file was the catch. Unzipped and thought: "Wow - easy, let's restart!" Which brought up the new theme of ...nada...
???? Well, after poking back into /theme, lo and behold, the zip produced a zip! So, a second unzip and TADA! Got it now.

So, since we're past pass-out time on my clock, more to explore in the AM, I'm sure.

Re: A Theme for E16 -- Fedora Blued Glass

I thought about using e17 until I read what they are about. Sounds like a bunch of dumb kids to me.

However, I don't hold it against everybody. Thought about trying it if I can make it look right, but cant find any good themes to even make it look good.

Can I get a screenshot to see what it looks like? Fedora blued glass just sounds too damn sweet.

I wish I was smart enough to understand your response...

It's okay, I looked at all the images that create the theme one by one and created it in my mind, beautiful. lol

That's probably because I was responding to Bob. <....>

Seems like an awful lot of skullwork when all you had to do was hit the repos, and install e16. <....>

Any reason why you prefer E16 over E17 Dan? Is there a screenie of the theme in action? Which reminds me I haven't logged into E17 for a while....

Re: A Theme for E16 -- Fedora Blued Glass

I'm not sure I prefer one over the other, Wayne. I'm still using E17 on the desktop box, and loving it. But e16 is different. It just seems to fit best on the laptops and the entertainment center. It has so small of a footprint that it makes E17 look like a resource hog, and it is so ... accessible, I guess would be part of it. It's high enough on the glitz scale to appeal, but a sound performer. It's even more of an open canvas upon which to create than E17 is ... so naturally it would appeal to the likes of me.

That being said, a good percentage of what makes this WM/theme combo appeal to me is dynamic in nature, and thus hard to capture with a screenshot. In many respects it has a lot of the same "toy" appeal that Gnome 3 has. Lotsa sliding goodies if you want 'em. Not so much if you don't. But without the goose-stepping lock-kneed, slack-jawed, fuzzy-focused mediocrity of Adwaita-think dragging it down from potential excellence into the morass of the misguided and mundane. It's yours to decide. And they've made no efforts to summarily castrate historically solid applications in order to get them to match a single utopian ideal of what everybody should look at, want, like and use, either. My menus are anywhere I damn well want them, the border is what I decide it is, and instead of hunting up the right place to click for them, I hunt up any place to click on them. In short, they're not trying to make it look like a Linu-Mac. Although you are free to do that yourself if you want to.

Plus it's one of the most little known/ignored DE/WMs out there ... which massively appeals to my compulsion to help the little guy. With the possible exception of Window Maker. ...

... and I absolutely refuse to admit that Rupert is ever right about anything, so that summarily rules out playing with WindowMaker. <....>

And that being said ... '

Re: A Theme for E16 -- Fedora Blued Glass

Well ... that neatly points out another issue I fixed and had forgotten about.

To get screenshots, there are two ways.

Use the epplets screenshooter ("E-ScreenShoot" in the epplets package -- from the epplets menu), or add this to your user menu, and then select it normally.
    Code:
    "Screenshot" NULL exec "gnome-screenshot --interactive"
