kernel 3.7.7-201: missing /dev/disk/by-uuid entries; no /dev/disk/by-label

Hello, my recent kernel upgrade seems to have broken /dev/disk:

This is on a UEFI/gpt system
1. No /dev/disk/by-uuid entry after partition 4 e.g. sda
Five gpt partitions on sda; only 4 entries /dev/disk/by-uuid.
sda5 is an xfs partition, and mounts correctly if I use the device name
sda5 shows up in by-id
sda5 does not appear in by-partlabel or by-partuuid
/dev/disk/by-label is missing entirely

# ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid | grep sda

# parted -s /dev/sda print

Disk /dev/sda: 2000GB

4 122GB 222GB 100GB ext4 primary
5 222GB 2000GB 1778GB xfs XFS_SRV

I have a BIOS/gpt system running 3.7.6-201 and all partitions are showing up.

What does ' lsblk -f ' show?

Re: kernel 3.7.7-201: missing /dev/disk/by-uuid entries; no /dev/disk/by-label

lsblk -f shows the full partition table correctly

NAME FSTYPE LABEL UUID MOUNTPOINT
sda
├─sda1 vfat F3E3-5641 /boot/efi
├─sda2 swap cec7d387-fa18-4bfc-a00e-2a19f565f5c4 [SWAP]
├─sda3 ext4 d68e19a5-0927-4e98-b7e7-bdacf7dec9aa /
├─sda4 ext4 fcc44cfe-09aa-4940-8566-91d6e73c7b14
└─sda5 /srv

sda5 in an XFS partition that I have mounted by device file name since UUID failed to work.

# xfs_admin -u /dev/sda5
UUID = f5ab2ac1-a6f8-43bb-97e0-9951bf8b7ec7

If lsblk can't see a UUID I think its a problem.

A couple of us on this forum have had problems with corrupted partition tables since 3.7.6-201. Don't know if this is because boot security patches screen out corrupted partitions better ( I hope ) or whether something is now affecting partition data ( I hope not!!! ). Take a look at this to see if it helps you isolate the problem.

Re: kernel 3.7.7-201: missing /dev/disk/by-uuid entries; no /dev/disk/by-label

Thanks Kobuck, that was indeed my situation.

I reused a partition from btrfs to xfs and libblkid detected two filesystem signatures, the new one, and the old one (from a backup superblock)

To summarise: if you reformat a partition with another filesystem, recent kernel and libblkid will not try to populate /dev/disk/* if it detects two or more filesystem signatures. If you want to repurpose a partition use wipefs first to eliminate existing signatures.

Re: kernel 3.7.7-201: missing /dev/disk/by-uuid entries; no /dev/disk/by-label

Glad to hear it solved problem.

My case was generated from the new F18 install process. I had been experimenting with several configurations ( and learning how to work new install process ) prior to the final install. Apparently even though you free up space the installer reuses the partition definitions. And since the distribution DVD includes the problematic versions of libblkid you are exposed to this issue if you have ever defined a BTRFS partition. So I had the issue even though I had done a from scratch "clean" final install.

My approach to getting a truly "clean" install of F18 was to jump into maintenance /repair mode from the install disk and use parted to delete all partitions on the three disks I wanted to configure prior to beginning the install.

Once that was done I re-booted did a normal install Fedora Menu select. The installer created new partitions appropriate to the configuration I defined ( I did define a 3 disk BTRFS stripe ) and I have had no problems since.
