Compiz is back in f18

Compiz is now available in fedora.

Differents from former fedora packages:
-- version is stable 0.8.8

-- gtk-windows-decorator is droped
because all windows-manager which i can use as base for gwd (metacity, marco)
are ported to gesettings, in result gwd doesn't work correctly.
So, emerald is the default and only windows-decorator.

-- gconf2/mateconf backend is droped
Default configuration backend is ini files, which is used by 'ccsm'.

Package list:

compiz
compiz-mate
compiz-xfce
compiz-lxde
compiz-bcop
compiz-manager
compiz-plugins-main
compiz-plugins-extra
compiz-plugins-unsupported
compizconfig-python
libcompizconfig
ccsm
emerald
emerald-themes
emerald-themes-extra
fusion-icon

compiz-mate contains the matecompat plugin and a start script 'compiz-mate-emerald'.
This you can add with dconf-editor to key desktop/mate/session/required-components/windowmanager.

compiz-lxde contains a start script 'compix-lxde-emerald' which can added in lxde preferenes as windows-manager.

compiz-xfce contains a start script 'compix-xfce-emerald'
simply add to autostart, i don't know a solution like in mate or lxde.

Have fun and feel free to test compiz

Edit:
supported desktops
-mate
-xfce
-lxde
-gnome-fallback

Edit:
For new users and those who have forgot

compiz doesn't support gnome-shell

no, you can't replace gnome's window-manager 'mutter' with compiz.

no, because this command starts only compiz but not emerald.

if you have compiz-mate installed try this icommand in a terminal.
Code:
/usr/bin/compiz-mate-emerald
for starting compiz directy with mate-session add 'compiz-mate-emerald'
to a gsettings key with dconf-editor.
Path is desktop/mate/session/required-components/windowmanager.

Re: Compiz is back in f18

Ok, I tried..

Code:
compiz-mate-emerald
and the windows decorations disappeared. Nothing I tried brought them back (see attachment #1).

I then tried..

Code:
compiz-manager
and got windows decorations(see attachment #2).

All other compiz functionality seems to be working fine, as well.

I created a launcher for compiz-manager and dropped it in ~.conf/autostart, so I'll have compiz enabled at startup.

One minor note: I had to configure utility/workarounds to support legacy full screen to be able to display mythtv in full screen, otherwise the top panel was always there.

I'm so happy to have compiz again.

Thanks for adding this to the Fedora Repos! I'll report back any anomalies I find.

Re: Compiz is back in f18

yeah, using compiz-manager is a solution too.
But if i used compiz-mate-emerald in a termininal it works, weird...
I did killed emerald before this test.
(see attachment #1)
The best solution for start compiz directly if seesion starts, is to add compiz-mate-emeraldas windows-manager in dconf-editor, imo..
(see attachment #2)

......if fusion-icon is available in the repo's all configuration should be more simple.

Re: Compiz is back in f18

Perhaps the reason compiz-mate-emerald in a terminal doesn't work for me is related to video hardware/driver differences between our machines.

Here is what I have..

VGA compatible controller: ATI RV410 [Radeon X700]
Kernel driver in use: radeon

Anyway, I'm just happy to have back the useful desktop environment I had in F14. Compiz was the missing piece of the puzzle, not only for the eye candy, but for the work flow as well.

Thanks again for all your efforts!!

Re: Compiz is back in f18

can you help me trigger out this isue and post the output of those commands?
This are my output.
Code:
[rave@mother ~]$ glxinfo | grep "Software Rasterizer" -c
0
[rave@mother ~]$ glxinfo | grep texture_from_pixmap -c
3
Those queries are in the compiz-mate-emerald scripts.

Re: Compiz is back in f18

can you edit those lines in the spript.

Code:
#!/bin/bash

function runCompiz() {
    if ( [ -e /usr/lib/compizconfig/backends/libini.so ] || [ -e /usr/lib64/compizconfig/backends/libini.so ] )
        then
            exec compiz --replace --sm-disable --ignore-desktop-hints ccp &&
            emerald --replace $@
        else
        	exec compiz --replace --sm-disable --ignore-desktop-hints glib ini matecompat $@
        fi
to
Code:
#!/bin/bash

function runCompiz() {
    if ( [ -e /usr/lib/compizconfig/backends/libini.so ] || [ -e /usr/lib64/compizconfig/backends/libini.so ] )
        then
            exec compiz --replace --sm-disable --ignore-desktop-hints ccp &&
            emerald --replace $@
        else
        	exec compiz --replace --sm-disable --ignore-desktop-hints glib ini matecompat &&
                emerald --replace $@
        fi
Is there a different if you use the command in a terminal?

Re: Compiz is back in f18

Ok,I changed the compiz-mate-emerald script to reflect those changes but I still have no windows decorations of any kind.

I am running the script from the terminal.

Re: Compiz is back in f18

I did a new installation of f18 today and run into the same issue.
But i found a workaround. After installing fusion-icon and run fusion icon to start compiz the, the issue is gone. ......weird......
Now it's possible to start compiz from a terminal with 'compiz-mate-emerald'.
I have upload fusion-icon to the external mate-desktop-extra repo.
Feel free to confirm this....

Edit:
here is the official fusion-icon build
