Fedora 18 fails to boot up after installation of nVidia drivers

I installed the propriety nVidia drivers using the instructions and rpms provided by rpm fusion. All packages seemed to install OK and I then ran nvidi-xconfigran, however the machine now hangs during boot up. It seems to hang at different stages of the boot sequence, last time after "started GNOME display manager" showed "OK".

Any suggestions for investigating and resolving this would be appreciated...my Linux skills and knowledge have faded somewhat after 4 years away.

Re: Fedora 18 fails to boot up after installation of nVidia drivers

Which nVidia card do you have?
ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Li...rtedchips.html

akmod-nvidia driver is for current cards and the 17xx and 96xx are for FX cards and below. Looks like the 96xx legacy drivers are not yet available in the F18 repos.

Did you follow all 4 steps here? Some people miss Step 3: Make sure nouveau is removed from initramfs

http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showpo...55&postcount=1

I've never had to run nvidia-xconfig when installing nvidia cards with the akmod drivers, so I don't know how that might have affected your installation.

You can always check /var/log/Xorg.0.log to see what the problem might be.

As far as I can tell, I followed all steps correctly, although removal of nouveau from initramfs was done subsequent to installation.

I've caught nvidia-xconfig not running more than once.

Re: Fedora 18 fails to boot up after installation of nVidia drivers

I had exactly this problem. It turned out to be the nouveau driver was loaded by the kernel at boot time, so when it came time for the nvidia driver to be loaded, there was a conflict.

I used this script to remove nouveau from initramfs, and rebooted. Now the nvidia driver is loaded and working fine.

Code:
su
mv /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r).img /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r)
dracut --omit-drivers nouveau /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r).img $(uname -r)

Re: Fedora 18 fails to boot up after installation of nVidia drivers

Thanks JDJennings, your code solution worked for me.
Upgraded using the Fedup method and with your solution was able to go into Grub2 and go in via command line code and replace xorg.conf with a backup copy from F17. Rebooted and my dual screen display was back.

Re: Fedora 18 fails to boot up after installation of nVidia drivers

I faced the same issue.
I installed the nvidia driver following the Forum guide. I removed Nouveau from initramfs and the system worked normally.
Later, after rebooting, Nouveau was loaded instead of the Nvidia module! Why this happened?
Following jdjennings advice solved the problem.
Code:
lsmod | grep -e nvidia -e nouveau
nvidia 11283758 44
i2c_core 38354 3 i2c_i801,nvidia,videodev
The only doubt I have is that I don't see any string related to preventing Nouveau to load in /etc/default/grub:
Code:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="rd.md=0 rd.lvm=0 rd.dm=0 $([ -x /usr/sbin/rhcrashkernel-param ] && /usr/sbin/rhcrashkernel-param || :) rd.luks.uuid=luks-8bf2e296-dc21-4797-b7fa-c7ef44bbe991 vconsole.keymap=it2 acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor"
or in the corresponding lines in grub.cfg ...

Just to be sure, I added this line in /etc/defaul/grub:
Code:
rdblacklist=nouveau nouveau.modeset=0
This line was generated after running the commands explained in the Forum guide to remove Nouveau from initramfs,
but then strangely disappeared without any warning ...
