dsl won't connect

I am using F17 LXDE my dsl modem does not work (it is new). You fire it up and the power, dsl and ethernet lights come on solid green but the internet light remains blank.I have called ATT to test things on their end and things are ok. DSL line is plugged directly into the phone jack, power line is plugged into the wall. It is not the new modem (actiontec) as the same thing happened on the one I just replaced.( best data). I have checked the network setup and dsl username and password are ok. One night it worked ok (with the old one), and in the morning it did not. This was why I got a new one, but it has not made any difference. Any thoughts?

Ok I don't even live in the US but AFAIK the Internet light only lightens if you have the username and password set in the modem (Router mode).
If it's set to use Bridge mode then the Internet light stays off and you have to setup the username and password in Network Manager or a similar app.

Many modems, even if they come in Bridge mode from the ISP, can be set to Router mode.

What do you mean your DSL line is plugged directly into your phone jack. The last time I had DSL, you had to have a filter.

Here in the US anyway it's other things like fax machines, phones, etc., that plug into filters but the dsk modem does not want to be plugged in a dsl filter.

Yes I have filters on all connected devices except the modem;the modem is the only device that does not have one. I meant that whether I plug the modem into the chain of devices, or directly into the wall I get the same result.

Re: dsl won't connect

It sounds like you purchased the modem separately. Have you reviewed all the modem settings with your internet provider? Last time I looked at a dsl modem setup there were some pretty non-understandable (to me) network settings that will make the modem not work if they are set wrong.

Re: dsl won't connect

@Bookman: I think you said it was a 'best data' dsl modem, can you tell me the exact model number. Best data has four models:

http://www.bestdata.com/index.php?fi...iCategoryId=12

I expect that you use the DSL502E (single port) or DSL502EU (similar but adds a usb port). I can look through the particular user manual
and try to figure out what's wrong.

Usually you can plug the modem into the PC, then power it up and just use your browser to go to http://192.168.1.1 and there will be a
modem web page you can use to configure it.

Re: dsl won't connect

If he got the modem from AT&T, then the modem address will be 192.168.1.254. AT&T changes all of theirs to use that address.

I don't think he got the modem from AT&T, though.. Currently, all they are using are Motorola, 2wire, netgear and pace modems/gateways for their residential DSL. Chances are, if you get one from AT&T currently, you get a Motorola 3360 unless you need a gateway, then you get a netgear 7550.

AT&T has also had some issues with their configuration, and user accounts get messed up. Have you tried going to AT&T's site and reset your network password? There have been numerous reports of people not being able to get internet access and had to reset the network password to fix it.
