virtualbox problem

today i came up with this error in my FC17 virtualbox:

Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908)

i started googling and searching the forum.

i ve tried the:

/etc/init.d/vboxdrv status or setup

command to no use, since there is no file with this name.

i installed akmod to no use as well
i installed dkms to no use as well
i installed kernel-devel to no use as well
i rebooted several times after every installation, to no use as well.
i tried the "/etc/sysconfig/modules/VirtualBox.modules" as vbox suggested and got this:

ERROR: Module vboxdrv not found.
ERROR: Module vboxnetflt not found.
ERROR: Module vboxnetadp not found.

i m quite frustrated, not only because from what it seems a package manager does not work as it should, but also because i ve lost 3-4 hours of my day trying to solve a problem, i didnt even cause. so is there any solution?

ps: fedora day-by-day tries to convince me to migrate. if you got bored of maintaining it, let us know. some people use it to work on it, and not just to brag that they re not using ubuntu "muahaha what a linux warmonger i am"...

Re: virtualbox problem

A couple of things to try.

1. Check if you have kernel-headers installed.

2. Try

Code:
yum reinstall VirtualBox
This is from rpmfusion.

If either of these is not a solution, try installing virtualbox from virtualbox repository here - https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

Re: virtualbox problem

This may sound obvious, but just in case you don't know. After installing the kernel module, make sure you have rebooted the system before retrying to launch VirtualBox.

Re: virtualbox problem

My apology. My tired eyes have somehow missed the sentence in your first post that you have rebooted several times. I just rebooted my PC back to Fedora 17 system and I can confirm I have similar problem in launching VirtualBox. It was OK before the last kernel update. I have 3.6.3-1 at the moment. I wonder why the akmod-VirtualBox does not rebuild the corresponding kernel module as expected. Anyway, now you know you are not alone .

Re: virtualbox problem

If I remember correctly I had to do:

Code:
sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup
and then wait a bit it seems like it's doing nothing but it actually is...

If that's not good start virtualbox from terminal

Code:
virtualbox
you should see an error before it starts up hook us up with it!

Re: virtualbox problem

A lot of times, this has to do with the naming of the Fedora kernel-devel--for whatever reason, you can't do install kernel-devel you have to install kernel-PAE-devel if running a PAE kernel

I realize that you have already migrated, (and that might not have been the issue) but figured I'd post it for others
