Angry Need help, SD Card USB adapter only works sometimes with F16/F17

I have 2 computers (one with F16 one with F17) and I am having the same problem on both computers. I bought 2 different SD card readers so I can plug my cameras 128mb card in and download my pictures. When I do so the icon appears "126mb volume", but it dissapears, and reappears, and dissapears. This happens time and time again. Once in a while if I click it quickly I can get into it, but sometimes I get errors "unable to splice file" (or similar) I can get it to work correctly about 1 out of 20 times.

You got to look at the error messages. Do:
$ su -
# tail /var/log/messages

or
$ dmesg

Then plug the thing in and see what crops up.

Re: Need help, SD Card USB adapter only works sometimes with F16/F17

I'm having similar issues. The kernel is continually disconnecting my USB drives - no matter whether my Android phone as a camera or mtp device, or any of 5-10 USB drives I've tried that are all working in my laptop that is still running F15.

Here's some loggery:

Something is wrong with that device. You can try repartitioning and recreating the file system with gparted, but it should probably be chucked away.

When you install a SD card into my camera it automatically formats it in the form into the camera wants to see. As far is the adapter is concerned I've tried 2 of these so far and these are both brand new purchased from the store.

SD cards are usually formatted with FAT32. So you can use gparted or fdisk and mkfs.vfat and partition and format it yourself. While doing that, keep a careful lookout for error messages.

The trick to debugging is to use the command line, so that you can see the error messages, then google them for details.

Wouldn't using gparted require the SD Card to be mounted?

No, gparted works on the raw device.

Gparted is a graphical toy, you don't need a user guide. However, be sure NOT to modify your sda (boot disk).

I formatted it with gparted, but it is still doing the same thing now. The card mounts and unmounts continually forever. Still no luck

Update - I tried an 8.1gb sdhc card and it seems to work fine. Strange.
