kernel update -> mouse stops working

Hello

I've downloaded the fedora lxde spin and wanted to install the ATI drivers so I follwed some guides and started by doing a yum update kernel, however it seemed that after the update (after rebooting in the new kernel) my wired usb mouse would stop working. If I uplug it and replug it in either the same or a different usb port it will work again for something between 2 and 20 seconds. After that it stops. The light on the mouse goes out. My wired USB keyboard however has no problems. Before the kernel update and in Windows the mouse works just fine, so it's not broken.

I've tried both the 32 and 64 bit versions. The current 32bit kernel (the one in which the mouse breaks) is 3.5.4-2.fc17.i686. I haven't tried other desktop enviroment spins because I'm not interested in using them anyways.

xinput --list does detect the mouse even if it's in a non working state.

I'm not sure how to fix/troubleshoot this and my searches haven't given me any good information so that's why I'm opening up a topic myself.

Thanks in advance for any help you may provide.

Does /var/log/messages contain any relevant info?

Re: kernel update -> mouse stops working

removing the mouse and plugin it into a different usb port generates

Code:
Oct 6 20:03:28 localhost kernel: [ 92.927661] usb 2-1.2: >USB disconnect, device number 5
Oct 6 20:03:37 localhost kernel: [ 101.925527] usb 1-1.5: >new full-speed USB device number 4 using ehci_hcd
Oct 6 20:03:37 localhost kernel: [ 102.012765] usb 1-1.5: >New USB device found, idVendor=1038, idProduct=1300
Oct 6 20:03:37 localhost kernel: [ 102.012769] usb 1-1.5: >New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0
Oct 6 20:03:37 localhost kernel: [ 102.012772] usb 1-1.5: >Product: Kinzu
Oct 6 20:03:37 localhost kernel: [ 102.012774] usb 1-1.5: >Manufacturer: SteelSeries
Oct 6 20:03:37 localhost kernel: [ 102.015164] input: SteelSeries Kinzu as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1a.0/usb1/1-1/1-1.5/1-1.5:1.0/input/input17
Oct 6 20:03:37 localhost kernel: [ 102.015602] hid-generic 0003:1038:1300.0006: >input,hidraw2: USB HID v1.10 Mouse [SteelSeries Kinzu] on usb-0000:00:1a.0-1.5/input0
Oct 6 20:03:37 localhost kernel: [ 102.016094] usbhid 1-1.5:1.1: >couldn't find an input interrupt endpoint
removing and plugging it back into the same port:

Code:
Oct 6 20:05:28 localhost kernel: [ 212.997673] usb 2-1.1: >reset full-speed USB device number 8 using ehci_hcd

the "couldn't find an input interrupt endpoint" seems wrong, but the message is generated when the mouse is plugged in and not at the time it stops working.

Re: kernel update -> mouse stops working

I "fixed" the problem.

I'm now using one of my USB 3 ports for the mouse, and apperantly Fedora likes that better, everything works as it should now.
