Re: Valve's Steam Linux Beta Begins Next Week

It's almost tempting to get Ubuntu just to try it out!

Almost

I highly doubt that the beta cannot be run on other distro's than Ubuntu.

I cannot wait to play 'proper' games on my Linux machine!

Same here! Would be a real bummer if they went out of their way to make sure it ONLY runs on Ubuntu...

From what I've read on their blog, they're initially only releasing it on Ubuntu, but when-and-if it takes off there, they'll look into exporting it to a wider range of OS's. Which is fair enough, I suppose.

Given that 'regular' Steam can run on Linux through Wine, I can't imagine they'll try too hard to lock down on making the Ubuntu release strictly Ubuntu-only. That said, I'm not a Valve dev!

Re: Valve's Steam Linux Beta Begins Next Week

I'd use it on Ubuntu if I HAVE to, to help with the beta process, but otherwise I'd be happy to just run it in Arch as I know inevitably it will show up in the AUR.

Yes, because the quake/doom series and RTCW etc arent 'proper' games.

As long as we get goldsrc games like CS and TFC I will be happy, I consider steam a necessary evil as it is required to run those games legitimately and will even beat running WON2 Half-Life on wine!
