Any terminal program should get you a command line where you can enter commands and see the output of the commands. Typically, I only use "Run Application" when I know in advance that the application is graphical and I don't need or want to see any other output. You can also switch to the console (text) by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1. You may need to login, but once you're in, you can issue commands that way as well.
