Unable to update or complte transaction

Have been trying to update but first message is you have unfinished transactions suggest yum-coplete-transactions which after doing I get the following message;
Error: Trying to remove "yum", which is protected
You could try using --skip-broken to work around the problem
You could try running: rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest

tried the above but nothing changes, any ideas, please if you can give me a step by step solution. thankyou

Well, it isn't that strange that when you (try to) remove yum you break the update system
Try yum clean all.

Or you can do:

yum-complete-transactions --cleanup-only

Which "disk" is that?

You'll have to configure your computer to boot from cdrom drive ;-)

Re: Unable to update or complte transaction

From restart the computer now will not boot from cd/dvd drive first even though all the settings are correct and checked but when operational albeit in limited capacity it will read the cd drive. I would happily install a fresh 17 if only i could get it to read the disk and boot from that.
