Unable to login - removed important package?
I am currently unable to log into to Fedora, and I can't seem to fix it. The issue is that I can get to the login screen, enter my details, and it appears to log me in but then I get shown the login screen again. This process then repeats itself. The same happens with the root account.
I have a feeling I removed some sort of important package when trying to fix a problem with some development I was doing. Is there therefore a way I can restore the default packages for Fedora and hopefully fix the problem?

Like :
yum groupinstall XFCE

Re: Unable to login - removed important package?
Should I in theory be able to do this with Ctrl + Alt + F1? I'm new to Fedora, so forgive me if that's a stupid question.

If you were using GNOME before, you should be able to reinstall anything needed that you may have removed with:
Code:
yum groupinstall "GNOME Desktop Environment"
Also check ~/.xsession-errors to see what failed when logging in.

Great Gareth. I learned something too. Is this possible with every kind of GUI?

Re: Unable to login - removed important package?
It is possible to install different DEs using yum just as Gareth had indicated.
You can also look at information about packages in a specific group using yum. For example,
Code:
yum groups info xfce
Loaded plugins: langpacks, presto, refresh-packagekit
Group: Xfce
Description: A lightweight desktop environment that works well on low end machines.
Mandatory Packages:
Thunar
desktop-backgrounds-compat
xfce-utils
xfce4-panel
xfce4-session
xfce4-settings
xfconf
xfdesktop
xfwm4
Default Packages:
ConsoleKit
NetworkManager-gnome
Terminal
abrt-desktop
fedora-icon-theme
gdm
gtk-xfce-engine
gvfs
leafpad
openssh-askpass
orage
polkit-gnome
thunar-archive-plugin
thunar-volman
tumbler
xarchiver
xfce4-appfinder
xfce4-icon-theme
xfce4-mixer
xfce4-power-manager
xfce4-session-engines
xfwm4-theme-nodoka
xscreensaver-base
Optional Packages:
[ ... ]
Conditional Packages:
[ ... ]
Here, you use kde or lxde too.

Only the ones with official Fedora packages and package groups. The available package groups on my F17 (in the Desktops category) are "GNOME Desktop Environment", "KDE Software Compilation", "LXDE", "MeeGo NetBook UX Environment", "Sugar Desktop Environment", "Window Managers", and "Xfce".
