My scanner is only detected when I run as root... and running as root gives this crazy warning message. Why's that? Is it similar to why I can only burn CDs with K3B as root?

It's a permissions issue as to why you can only access your scanner as root. You'll need to change the permissions on the device. Whats the model of the scanner that was automatically detected?

I have a HP all-in-one model, everything works exept the scanner. Its connected with usb, and the model is a PSC 2400 series.

I have fedora core 3 installed, including the hpoj-driver. Xsane is still not able to detect it.

If anybody can help me, thanks..

You need to run the setup program before hpoj will report the scanner to fedora. Run 'ptal-init setup' as root, answer the questions it asks, then sane will work. I recommend kooka as the scanning program, it works well and is somewhat easy to use.
