Is /var on it's own partition? I've gotten that message when there were issues mounting /var.

Nope thats not the issue.

---------- Post added at 09:54 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:37 PM ----------

by the way this is on fedora 12. I have researched this error out and it looks like maybe a longtime bug that no one has ever been able to figure out.

I'm hoping I'm wrong and some one with some fedora knowledge will be able to shed some light.

Anyone??

Also I just tried to do a yum update and that is erroring out as well.

This happens both on my fedora 12 and fedora 15. Can anyone tell me if the fedora repos got hacked and they are broken somehow?

Re: Trying again

You stand a better chance of getting help if you title your thread about the problem itself.

Move to EOL, merged with previous thread.

DO NOT open another thread on this issue. One is enough, and all you're gonna get.

No. That means exactly what it says. No more, no less. (If I had the answer, I would have posted it already.)

A little free advice, though ... at this point, I strongly advise you to read the forum posting rules before posting again. <....>

Thanks.

Wish I could do more, but as we're all just users helping users ... sometimes it takes a while for the right fellow to come along. In the meantime, this should bounce it to the top of the heap once more.

It can also be very helpful to those trying to give you a hand if you post details on any thing you've tried so far, and various results thereof.

Re: Can't update IECauthority file : /var/gdb/.IECauthority ...Help!!

I dont know why that file is in /var.
On mine it is in /home
Anyway, it looks like an ownership issue with the file.
If you look at it in properties/permissions you will probably see it is oened by root

My /var/gdm folder is owned by root but there is nothing in it

you may try (by logging in via a command line, rather than through the login screen)

sudo chown yourname:yourname /var/gdm/.ICEauthority

If that doesnt work (because the folder is owned by root ) you might try

sudo chown -R yourname:yourname /var/gdm

to change the folder and all contents to your ownership.

Note: I dont know if there are other files in that folder which should be owned by root

This works for me on other distros. I havent tried it on fedora

Re: Can't update IECauthority file : /var/gdb/.IECauthority ...Help!!

@eeeprom,

In case the suggestion provided by phd79 doesn't work for you, I did some Googling and found some Fedora-specific tips / solutions:

http://ask.fedoraproject.org/questio...file-after-f16
"Could not update ICEauthority file after F16 install." 14 Nov. 2011

http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=283201
".ICEauthority issue." 14 Aug. 2012

http://zurlinux.com/?p=267
"Could not update .ICEauthority." 25 Sept. 2011

http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=239563
"ICEauthority." 30 Jan. 2010

Hopefully one (or more) of these will get you up and running again.

< You might try looking here for the Fedora 12 .iso:

http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/fedora-arch...dora/i386/iso/

I've used HEAnet with one of my other distros' repositories (PCLinuxOS) and have received a reliable, stable connection. >

Re: Can't update IECauthority file : Progress but need assistance

So I hooked up a new harddrive installed Fedora 17. I can see the Fedora 12 Harddrive.

Some of the folders Are xed out and according to Fedora I don't have permission to view them. Even as root. It also says there is corruption in these folders. I am sure they are the ones I need to get into. Any thoughts on How I can do this?
