Lost in (disk) space!

So, here I was t'other day wondering why I had zero bytes free on my / partition on my desktop machine. I thought 14Gb for / was pretty generous seeing as my /var is on a separate partition! So, I removed some apps I that I wasn't really using to free up some space, installed K4DirStat and found the guilty party! /usr was showing 10Gb full! What!? Drilling down a little deeper I found /usr/share/games/flightgear/Aircraft was taking up a whopping 4.9Gb! Whooa! I really don't play the game that much and only for 10 minutes at a time so it looks like I'm going to kiss it goodbye.... Or find the time to repartition my drive to give / some more space!

How old is that machine? My back up (spare) notebook has 40 gb of space (decade old machine). My new notebook came with a 500 gb hard drive.
Now a days, 250 gb HD's seem to be entry size on new machines. Might be time for a new HD, Wayne

Re: Lost in (disk) space!

He's got 14GB on the rootfs partition Dave, that's not the disk size.

Right, I have plenty of disk space hence my comment about repartitioning. My two internal drives consist of sda 500Gb, sdb 1Tb and when switched on, my external drive (sdc) is 2Tb

OK, OK, Just thought with 14 Gb for / that you were working with a smaller drive.
So when you start talking Tb's, I guess you have room to grow

Re: Lost in (disk) space!

If it is just that directory and you have free space else where,, could you not just move the directory to another partition and softlink?

Re: Lost in (disk) space!

Umm, I wonder! Perhaps I can move all the aircraft data to my /home under .fgfs and softlink it as you say. Bit busy today but I'll give it a shot when I have time.

Been playing around with E17, WindowMaker and OpenBox
