Mixed Mode Cd Burner

Is there a "mixed mode" CD-burner available for Fendora ( by mixed mode I mean the ability to burn data and music to the same disc ). In MS Windows I use NTI CD-Maker , which allows this operation , so I'm looking for something similar to this software. Thanks for any information!

Re: Mixed Mode Cd Burner

Sure the regular command line tools--as they're back ends for most of the GUI tools, I'm sure that most of the GUI burning tools do it too.

This howto is dated, one shouldn't need to scanbus anymore, but the commands should still work

Re: Mixed Mode Cd Burner

As I recall, a mixed-mode CD is generally just a multi-session master with audio tracks in the first session and a data track in the second. Any multi-session-capable burning hardware should be able to do it, and I doubt it's possible to find burning hardware that can't do that these days.

As for software, it's certainly possible from the command-line. I'm afraid I don't know about GUI methods. Brasero and K3b are the main GUI burners, and both support mullti-session burning. K3b's Wikipedia page explicitly mentions mixed-mode too, and K3b is generally more technically-complete than Brasero, so I'd try that.

Re: Mixed Mode Cd Burner

Ok , thanks for all the information! I installed kb3 before I read your responses , so I'll try this. I'm also interested in learning to do this from the command line ( this seems to be the Linux "way of doing things" ) so I'll try cdrecord as well ( I noticed there is a dvd version of this program as well ,dvdrecord ). It seems like most of the desktop programs are "GUI frontends" for some sort of command line program in Linux. Is this usually the case?

Re: Mixed Mode Cd Burner

You can find the official cdrecord here. It can also burn DVDs and BDRs so there's no need for "dvdrecord" ;-)

Re: Mixed Mode Cd Burner

The modern equivalent to cdrecord and dvdrecord etc. is wodim, which should already be installed in Fedora.

Re: Mixed Mode Cd Burner

Just to keep ahead of things, it is worth reading the link on the page to which George originally linked. The creator of cdrecord feels that wodim is an inadequate replacement. Reviews are mixed--that is, some folks say wodim is fine, or even better others say that it's horrible and only the genuine cdrecord will do.

With all apologies to Mr. Schilling, for my own, very limited needs, the version of cdrecord, included with RedHat and Debian versions, wodim, is usable for me. I don't do anything very out of the ordinary though.

At any rate, if you are doing sophisticated audio work, and the Fedora version of cdrecord doesn't work, note that it is actually wodim. (As pointed out by Gareth's post).

Re: Mixed Mode Cd Burner

Is there a way to calculate when the disk is full before attempting to burn it? I've burned a couple of "mixed mode" cd's using cdrecord by using k3b figure out how much data and music I can fit on a disk ( I know this is probably a silly thing to do ) and then create an iso image of the data with mkisofs , convert the mp3's with ffmpeg and burning the disk. Is there a way to calculate how much data and music can properly fit on a cd-r ( I like to fill my cd's totally up ). Thanks for any information....
