/proc/sys/net/ipv4/conf/ configuration

Hello,
After reading this documentation I was left with doubts..

Why I have to set both default and all NICS configuration options?

In the sysctl.conf file that comes with my system, only the default NIC configuration options are present:

net.ipv4.conf.default.rp_filter = 1
net.ipv4.conf.default.accept_source_route = 0

What is the difference of configuring all, default or both?

Default impacts any NEW interfaces added, lke a USB plugin or a TUN device for example.
ALL impacts all existing interfaces.

So ubuntu's /etc/sysctl.conf, LFS Book and Fedora's documentation are wrong (redundant) when they set values in both default and all?
