fedora 16 network menu disappeared

At top right in my gnome layout are dropdowns for display parameters, volume control, battery/power settings, and system controls (accounts, settings, log out, etc). Until recently there was also a network dropdown indicated by a "terminal" icon which allowed me to toggle wired, wireless, and also listed detected wireless networks. That icon/menu combination has disappeared.

Question: how do I get it back?

Good, bad news: mine came back after a half-dozen reboots or so, but I don't know why.

That is Network Manager - if you turn it off, that 'dropdown' goes away. Other than that, I don't know. I bring that up only because I noticed it today while trying to configure my network on a newly installed FC17 system - and not having a lot of luck!
