F17: Intel Ivy Bridge w/iGPU - HDMI - no sound

I have an F17 machine with an Intel Ivy Bridge CPU w/embedded Intel HD4000 GPU.

When I plug my HDMI into a TV the video works great but I get no sound.

aplay -l
Code:
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: STAC92xx Analog [STAC92xx Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 1: STAC92xx Digital [STAC92xx Digital]

  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]

aplay -L
Code:
# aplay -L
null

Sound works except for when I use HDMI cable.

I only see Internal Analog for Device in Sound.

How do you get HDMI sound working w/Intel embedded GPU card?

You have to configure gnome sound settings where you should find some HDMI Audio in the hardware section.

Try to add the device to /etc/pulse/default.pa and restart the computer, japplo

There's nothing but Internal Audio entry anywhere under System Settings | Sound.

I would try that but what exactly do I add in that file and where?

Solved.

In System Settings | Sound there is a Hardware tab.

Devices are listed. In my case there is only one device Internal Audio.

But, if you look below you'll see a dropdown for Profiles.

In the list of Profiles you should find an entry for HDMI. In my case it says Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output.

After selecting this then audio is redirected only to the HDMI port.

You will only hear audio on the TV not on your PC speakers.

After you disconnect from the TV you will have to reset the Profile to its original setting in order to once again hear output on the PC speakers.
