Installing and setting up FTP on Fedora 9

Hi guys,

I need help installing and configuring Fedora 9 as an FTP server. This computer will mainly get used for flashing firmware and the like, what program would be best and how do I set it up?

Thanks

I'm not sure what your set up or needs are, but you may want to look at using ssh. I found a guide here.

Copying files back and forth can be accomplished with scp on the command line or with gui-goodness using gftp.

I'm not sure how helpful this will be, but the oldest, official guide I could find is here.

I can't get past the first step in the first guide you game me cause it says that "service" is not a command. That has been my biggest issue with setting up this system is that it rejects most of the normal linux commands.

I found another guide here, but it is also using that command.

Are you root when you issue it? Have you tried /sbin/service?

I should point out that it looks like the guide linked in this post is trying to set up X11 forwarding, which you may not want.

Re: Installing and setting up FTP on Fedora 9

The reason service isn't working is because it's not in the path in Fedora 9. I have an old page on this, which, as the page says, is not relevant to newer versions of Fedora.

Once you have ssh running, you can also use sftp over the same connection to give similar functionality to normal ftp operations. If ssh doesn't end up working for you , look at vsftpd.

Re: Installing and setting up FTP on Fedora 9

I got ssh running but now I need to know how to use it. For example say I want to reflash the bios on a pc, not upgrade just completely reflash it, how would I go about that with ssh?

Re: Installing and setting up FTP on Fedora 9

I've never used ssh to flash the bios, but I did find this article.

Hope it helps.
