User settings for the Gnome3 Desktop

I am running FC17.

Is there any way to change the Gnome3 desktop look and feel ? In other words can I change the placement/size of the Dash, icons, application menu, or any of these things ?

Also how does one look at or change the settings for applications in the application menus or the Dash ?

If I should be asking these questions in another forum or some Gnome3 forum, please tell me.

Re: User settings for the Gnome3 Desktop

Code:
 yum install gnome-tweak-tool
This might be the first step ... Also, in addition to the extensions site in the previous post, search the forum for gnome 3 tweaks - you will find some useful pages.

In addition to gnome-tweak-tool and shell extensions, there are also shell themes (which change the appearance rather than the behaviour as the others generally do). There are several available on the internet, and the tweak-tool will let switch between them. If you're comfortable editing XML/CSS/JavaScript, you can create your own customizations as themes and extensions.

I installed the tool but it did nothing for the things I mentioned in my OP.

Is there really no way to change the size and positions of the Dash and the Application menus, nor to change the size of the icons used in either ?

How do I add links to the Applications menu system or the Dash ? It seems like it should be as easy as dragging some item into these areas but neither the Applications or the Dash appears to allow something as easy as that. This is especially disappointing since the desktop does not exist anymore in order to add desktop items to it. Essentially it seems like it is almost impossible to add a link to anything in Gnome3 so that it actually shows up in some place where you can use it.

I hope I have missed something but this is one very difficult and user-unfriendly GUI for manipulating the visual side of things. I know there are some nice features in it, such as the many workspaces and the mini-presentation of applications running, but manipulating it from the end-user's perspective of adding links to applications, filed, URLs, and hardware is really deficient.

Where are these shell themes manipulated in Fedora ? Where are they available on the Internet and how are they added to Fedora ?

Re: User settings for the Gnome3 Desktop

For themes you first need to install "gnome-shell-extension-user-theme".
Then go to a site like http://gnome-look.org/ or http://browse.deviantart.com/customi...ktopenv/gnome/ to download themes.
Download a theme you like, put it in "~/.themes" or install it with the gnome-tweak-tool, then select it with the tweak tool.
