Mint's Cinnamon desktop integrated into Fedora 17 (it will be likely part of F18)

The Fedora project's package repositories now include the Cinnamon desktop interface initially started by Linux Mint founder Clement Lefebvre. The desktop, which is in many aspects similar to GNOME ]2, has been available to install via a simple add-on repository maintained by Fedora developer Leigh Scott since the beginning of the year.

While maintaining this repository, Scott submitted the Cinnamon packages, and those for the Muffin compositing Window Manager that is required to run the desktop, to the Fedora project for review. The review process flagged a number of problems that have been solved in the past six months.

Thank you for posting the link, I probably wouldn't have seen it if you hadn't.

The cinnamon F16 package requires karma, so please leave your feedback here .

Hah, our very own Leigh made it into the news! I know he put a lot of effort into making Cinnamon available for Fedora users. Good job, Leigh!

I just checked and it is in the Fedora repos now:
Code:
# yum info cinnamon
Available Packages
Name : cinnamon
Arch : x86_64
Version : 1.4.1
Release : 0.8.git7959517.fc17
Size : 1.3 M
Repo : updates
Summary : Window management and application launching for GNOME
URL : http://cinnamon.linuxmint.com
License : GPLv2+
Description : Cinnamon is a Linux desktop which provides advanced
: innovative features and a traditional user experience.
            :
: The desktop layout is similar to Gnome 2.
: The underlying technology is forked from Gnome Shell.
: The emphasis is put on making users feel at home and providing
: them with an easy to use and comfortable desktop experience.
I'm glad Cinnamon will now be easier to install in Fedora, even though I have no interest in using it. On my main F17 system it tries to bring in 104 dependencies!

yup, I was very surprised as well

too bad Leigh is "retired" as admin, even though he made a very, very good job.

I'm currently on Xfce 4.10 (F17), earlier this year I was on Cinnamon and went to Xfce because of the "problems", after the "review process" of Cinnamon went well I'm considering going back to Cinnamon.

Very good news indeed.

@RupertPupkin

what is your favorite DE?

I use just a plain window manager, Window Maker. I'm not into "desktop environments." The last one I thought was decent was CDE.

My impression of the review process was that it was half solving build issues and half fighting gnome developers that didn't want to see a competitor to Gnome 3 in the repositories.

yeah, funning thing is gnome3 is not rly listening to user complaints, they're just going the "tablet-way" and beside that they don't want to look at any other DEs.

Surely it should have come to their ears by now that DEs like Cinnamon and Mate only exist because of their ***.

Where did you read that? There are already competitors to GNOME 3 in the Fedora repos (e.g. KDE, XFCE, LDXE). I could understand if they were worried about possible file or library conflicts with GNOME 3, but that's a different concern.

This is good news! I went back to gnome-shell after trying cinnamon due to stability issues but it might be worth to give it another try soon.

Also, this might just be the DE of choice Red Hat would adopt to replace Gnome2 as it contains more modern underlying code all while offering a recognizable and desktop-friendly user interface.

I've been following this on the cinnamon thread. Apparently cinammon had a more controversial package review than any other package in recent memory, and some developers were even trying to make cinammon meet higher standards than other packages; package reviews are just supposed to make sure that they're packaged correctly and compile against all the Fedora builds, but some were trying to force cinnamon to be bug-free before being included. The bar kept being raised higher and higher for no apparent reason as well.

KDE, LXDE, etc. were not created in response to user outcry to Gnome 3. They existed earlier and serve different purposes. Cinnamon explicitly caters to users that hate Gnome 3, and it's reason for existence is to give Gnome refugees a home (MATE too). I'm sure the very existence of these DEs hurts the pride of the Gnome developers, who think that their DE is the greatest thing since sliced bread and that everyone else is wrong. They think that they know what their users want better than their own users do.

It doesn't help that cinnamon forked some Gnome libraries because the Gnome team rejected bugs/feature requests the cinnamon team submitted. This forking was controversial early on.

Hmm. Inevitable GNOME-dev hate-fest aside, it's actually quite reassuring/worrying (delete as appropriate) that a new desktop got into the official repositories within six months or so of being created.

That would be calling it bleeding edge indeed!

Of course, but as a project it's new – to build up enough of a developer and support team that fast is impressive. I'm glad it's made it in.
