Internet costs around the world

Just a curiosity thing here, what sort of prices are people paying for internet access in different parts of the world?

No need for mentioning company names or anything. I'm curious because I live in a remote area with limited options and it feels like a large company has a hand down the front of my pants and is squeezing till I bleed.

But then again, it may turn out that I'm just plain spoilt and don't know when I've got it good.

One company is the sole provider of wireless broadband in my area, AU$150 buys you 10 Gb total transfer with good speeds if you are lucky enough to have built your house somewhere where an aerial can pick it up.

Or with satelite, the only other option, AU$25 gets you 5 Gb total transfer at 256 kbps down and 128 kbps up, 4 Gb of that can only be used in the AM hours, 1 Gb during peak times.

Aussie dollar is pretty much same value as US dollar these days.

Good thing about satelite though, when I've used all my gigs for the month it doesn't cut me off, it just slows down to the old dial up speeds and I don't have to pay any extra.

Installed F17 onto a mate's computer from a live thumbstick, installed Yumex, added atrpms then opened the groups list in Yumex and ticked every box except extra languages. Downloads took 53 hours but worked perfectly.

I'm on a 100Mb fibre up/down all-you-can-eat plan. Can't remember the exact cost but it's somewhere around 6000 yen per month including our landline and one mobile phone. I really should upgrade to the 1Gb service, it's about the same price but would need to fork over 10,000 yen for the upgrade fee (new router and installation)

Re: Internet costs around the world

Why did you tick every box? Did you mean all available packages under a group heading or the whole repository?

A lot of packages are for development such as building rpms etc so you don't need them.

No, just every category box, default programs from each. He's never seen Linux before and wants to play with everything and see what it can do. Plus I added a couple of my favourites like vlc, handbrake and clementine. Total download wouldn't have been more than 2 Gb I think.

I have a 10mb download, 1mb upload connection with unlimited bandwidth for £21 a month - it gets capped during peak hours, but not so severely that you notice with normal use. I just save any large uploads until after the cap lifts

I have up to 20mb down and 1mb up with 60gb per month for $50, actually $80 with the phone. If I go over the cap it is slowed to 128k.

76Mb down, 19Mb up unlimited at £20/month. In practise my speeds are on average 60Mb down and 13Mb up.

Re: Internet costs around the world

I was right, I am being bled.

I understand the cost of infrastructure for low returns due to low population argument and I agree.

But I only live 90 minutes by road from the CBD of one of Australia's capitol cities!

60 Km by air. By road you have to go around the harbour.

Re: Internet costs around the world

I feel the OP's pain as I am also Australian and happen to know which obvious big company he's talking about (spoiler: rhymes with 'felcher', sort of )

I used to only have access to wireless broadband or satellite and the prices can be pretty insane.

I moved a year or so ago though to a more major area and now have 500Gb ADSL2+ plan. Speed is typically around 6-7Mbs on a good day I think. Price about $120 a month but that includes home phone line etc. Probably not as good as other places but a lot better than what I had.

Re: Internet costs around the world

In practice my speeds vary, but the fastest download I ever got was 1.7 MB/s. Upload speed is generally around 100-110 KB/s. Costs $75 including phone for 30GB a month. (though another provider offers basically the same deal but with 40GB)

TalkTalk costs me £6.50 per month for 20mib down, 1mib up with a 40GB allowance - no capping in peak hours or any other restrictions.

Phone line rental was £14.50 per month but I took advantage of their deal and paid for a whole year in advance which reduces it to £9.50 per month

Re: Internet costs around the world

£10 for internet. £10 line rental.

My download with a maximum download speed of 16mb, It works out at 10mb all the time, no throatlling. I could have paid £7 more and got 100mb and unlimited but I would not use it.
My limit is 40Gb, but if I use iplayer/itvplayer/4oD etc through my TV then they do not count towards my download limit.

I also get unlimited free wifi minutes anywhere that has a BT Openzone/fon/wi-fi connection.

Re: Internet costs around the world

I pay 20 € per month for internet and additional 20 € per month for the telephone connection. I'm granted 6 Mb/s in download and something like 1 Mb/s in upload as bandwith, with no limit over the total amount of data exchanged. Yeah, I'm being robbed but.. there are no cheaper alternatives yet in this country.
