Post your Fedora 17 gaming experiences!
Hello everyone! I've been using Fedora 17 for a few months now and I thought it would be neat to post some of the games I've been able to get working. I know Linux has never been well known as a gaming platform, but I really feel like things are progressing in this area.
When I started one of my first priorities was getting World of Warcraft working, as I had a active account. The last Wine version it was a pain to install, you had to patch in a Windows VM, then copy the content to your working Wine folder. With the latest Wine version, however, the game installs and patches just fine and runs near perfectly.
Since I've started, Steam support has improved in Wine. Left 4 Dead worked perfectly out of the box, as well as another game I have called Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition.
There similar program for Linux called Desura, I was able to get Trine 2 working with friends who played on Steam and the Apple Store. Great game by the way.
Two Java based games that work perfect are Minecraft and Spiral Knights. My emulators seem to work fine. Of course, any Flash games work fine.
The Second Life client works perfect in Fedora, which can be amusing and even profitable.
So, it seems like more and more high quality gaming options are popping up in Linux. I'd be interested to hear what other users have been able to get working!

Do you happen to mean this?
Have to say that I love the music!
Although I do not see me dumping Chromium B.S.U. for it anytime soon...
Unfortunately Wine and games hasn't been a success for me (trouble with AMD drivers, open source drivers, Optimus weirdness and what not) so I just stick with the native stuff like Xonotic.
Occasionally I try out a new open source game that I find but most of it is quite rough around the edges, or it doesn't work properly on my state of the art HD4350 and its open source driver, or it is just not fun enough.
Maybe Steam will enhance the gaming experience on Linux a bit.

Yep, that's the one. There's a native Linux version in the Fedora repos:

Re: Post your Fedora 17 gaming experiences!
I don't understand why there aren't more Linux ports. I remember buying the special edition metal box version of Quake 3 Arena for Linux...
This was literally my first experience with Linux gaming, I installed Linux just to play it. That was around 2001. Unfortunately, my soft spot for games caused me to immediately return back to Windows (XP pro at the time).
It's been almost 12 years since then, and I was kind of surprised to see that Linux didn't take off as a gaming platform. I mean, there are gaming options, sure. But even Mac is a more attractive distribution channel for game makers, which depresses me. I would of expected Linux to have long since surpassed them by now. HOWEVER, hopefully more game makers will start making Linux ports for services like Desura and with any luck... Steam will adopt Linux support as well.
Edit: PS: Hey RupertPupkin, how do you get the Fedora icon? O.o I'm using Fedora 17 and I just get the generic penguin icon.

Re: Post your Fedora 17 gaming experiences!
I've actually found that Morrowind runs more stably in Wine than it did on my XP installation! Whether that's something funny with me PC/setup or a regular thing though, I don't know...
My favourite Linux-native game is definitely Amnesia though - absolutely brilliant game; probably the scariest I've ever played!

See my first post (#7) in this thread: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=264680
Basically just install the User Agent Switcher add-on for Firefox and change the user agent field.

My experience with NetHack has mostly been distro-neutral.

Chromium is kool, but still, Critter is the king. Well, Amiga's Disposable hero is still the best one ever, but no Linux version here, E-UAE runs it just fine though. :)
I don't play much, but like every sane person, I do from time to time. And with Nouveau for the very first time. Seriously, I was impressed by it lately.
It runs Doom3 perfectly fine, which was unheard of some time ago. Q3/OA runs perfect too, Darwinia and AtomZombieSmasher as well. Plus many other games Fedora has in repos which I installed only to try out the driver. But it also runs Dead Cyborg perfectly. It's a Blender created stuff on par with Doom3 lighting and in general it's a super cool first person adenture, recommended.
I will try some other games or rather their demos, as I don't own many of them anymore.
Anyway, kudos to Nouveau guys, you rock!
BTW, the card is GTX260, so it's among the best supported chipsets.
P.S. I forgot to mention the stability. Some time ago, when playing with Nouveau, I always enabled magic keys first, but I have yet to face a single crash in OpenGL with Nouveau now. Amazing how far these guys got without having any HW specs..

Same here. I found that the storage area, the prison, and the sewer were the scariest parts of the game. I like that you don't get any kind of weapon so your only option is to turn your lantern off, run and hide in a dark corner when you encounter a Grunt or a Brute and wait for them to go away.

Re: Post your Fedora 17 gaming experiences!
some games I played in the last few month on Linux: - Regnum Online: A free2play MMORPG, with good RvR system
- Flare - a open source game, similar to Diablo I, under heavy development
- Unknown Horizons - a open source game of anno style, it lag's a bit and crashs sometimes, also still much developed
- Supertuxcart
- Planeshift: a free and open source MMORPG, PvE and roleplay, crafting, lacks good PvP; it's a bit boring and to time consuming, I abandoned it
- ardentryst - a good action/arcade game based on pygame; but very short, not finished and not under development
- 0AD - a open source game, similar to Age of Empires

Used to play Quake but it's become too much trouble to get it to work under Linux. All I play now is PySol solitaire.

Re: Post your Fedora 17 gaming experiences!
Getting quake to run is rather simple, unless you want to use the old id's source, that is a problem.
But today's Quake source ports are much better anyway, there is not much of a reason to use original id's source.
QuakeSpasm is the most faithful one round. Compiling is piece of cake. Then there is DarkPlaces which has also 32 and 64bit binaries. There are others like QuakeForge or TyrQuake.
In all cases, all that is needed is engine executable and then only id1 folder (with pak0.pak and pak1.pak) in the same directory as the executable.
Since Linux is case sensitive, every directory and pak-file must be in lower case.

Re: Post your Fedora 17 gaming experiences!
I also used to play OpenArena which is heavily based on Quake III Arena. It's also in the default Fedora repo.
The only other first-person shooter game I liked to play on Linux is Sauerbraten.
