Equivalent to Debian net install

Is there an equivalent to a Debian net install for 64 bit Fedora 17 or a minimal installtion that gives me the basics and allows me to install only what I need?

Re: Equivalent to Debian net install

Yes, to a point. There is a netinstall iso, which would be like Debian's. With that, you can choose, at one point during the installation, the minimal install--while it will, like any other minimal install, probably have a few things you wouldn't pick, it will give you pretty much what a basic Debian install would give you.

The only difference is that Debian's installer is able to work in text only mode (or curses, at least) mode, whereas Fedora decided to place their emphasis on the GUI installer and as part of that decision, crippled the text mode installer to the point of limiting package selection and partitioning--probably some other limitations as well.

Depending on how minimalistic you want to get, but the live cd's install the basics of a desktop. There is no Libreoffice or GIMP on the live cd's (or installed).

Re: Equivalent to Debian net install

I was thinking base Linux, networking and Yum, or at least no X and desktop. I may want to install a Fedora / Mate system without the contamination of another environment. I'm not adjusting to Gnome 3 at all and if I can't do so in another week or two...

The minimal install will do that. There's a point during the installation from the netinstall CD (or DVD--just about anything but one of the live CDs) where you are given an option to choose your install, with the default being the Gnome desktop--at that point, you can pick minimal and when finished, you will have networking and yum, and be able to add a desktop at your leisure. RupertPupkin has some fairly recent posts about minimal installs--I think for X, you can get by with a minimum of xorg-server-Xorg, xorg-x11-drv-evdev, xterm, xorg-x11-xinit, and, if you have a laptop, probably xorg-x11-drv-synaptics. That will, if I remember correctly, pull in some fonts as well, otherwise, you'll need a few. Lastly, you need a driver for your video card, or at least xorg-x11-drv-vesa. Add on a window manager, and you're set.

Re: Equivalent to Debian net install

You can get the netinstall.iso on a mirror, like http://mirror.itc.virginia.edu/fedor...ses/17/Fedora/
yum comes without plugins so you might want to install afterwards presto, fastestmirror and remove-with-leaves, for starters.

A UK mirror http://mirror.ox.ac.uk/sites/downloa...ses/17/Fedora/

Re: Equivalent to Debian net install

Thanks all. The netinstall iso looks just the thing. I think I'll be having a play shortly.
