Upgrade issue - F16 to F17
Trying to follow my own instructions posted here: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=280468
This process worked for my F15 to F16 upgrade, and figured I would give it a shot going from 16 to 17.
Getting an error message:
Code:
ERROR you need to update rpm to handle:
rpmlib(X-CheckUnifiedSystemdir) is needed by setup-2.8.48-1.fc17.noarch
rpmlib(X-CheckUnifiedSystemdir) is needed by filesystem-3-2.fc17.i686
RPM needs to be updated
You could try running: rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest
I'm trying to avoid doing a "preupgrade", which is why I upgraded from F15 to F16 as described. I have tried installing the two files listed above directly through yum, but get the same error (rpmlib is needed ...) I have also tried updating and reinstalling RPM (no updates available, and reinstall was successful, but did not fix the issue).
Any ideas now to prevent this error from occurring, preferably without a preupgrade?
Thanks in advance!

Re: Upgrade issue - F16 to F17
There are additional steps involved in upgrading to F17 without using preupgrade due to the /bin->/usr/bin and /sbin->/usr/sbin and /lib->/usr/lib and /lib64->/usr/lib64 merges.
The steps are outlined in the upgrade docs for Fedora 17.

Re: Upgrade issue - F16 to F17
I have gotten to the part where I need to install/update dracut, but I get the same message as before, so it won't install.
Can I manually move the /bin, etc... folders to /usr/bin, etc... and create symlinks?
Also, I have never messed with the grub boot menu, so I'm not sure exactly how to do that (other than using vi or gedit).
Should I give up now and do a preupgrade? My only concern is that my configuration files will be overwritten with the "default" ones, and I will have to start from scratch for the services I run (sql, php, gd, etc...)
Edit: ran dmesg | grep dracut and found that I had the most recent version (18-55.fc16), so I ran it, and I'm following the steps, just waiting for dracut to finish...

Re: Upgrade issue - F16 to F17
Yes, if your current system is F16 and you already have dracut-013-22.fc16 or newer, then teh update dracut step isn't needed.
But, did you already do some of the steps in the post you linked to above (like the manual edit of the /etc/yum.repos.d/*.repo files?) That may have gotten some things out of sync for the upgrade.
Edit:
For future reference...
yum --releasever=17 update
would do the same thing as manually editing the yum repo files and sticking the version number (in this case, 17) in all of them, and then doing an update.

Re: Upgrade issue - F16 to F17
When I posted, I had already edited the repo list, however I did revert them back to the originals before starting the process you linked to.
I think everything is working now, but I do have a new problem, being that the screen doesn't refresh. As soon as I login, the top and bottom bars come up like they should, but the "login" window stays in the center (but I cannot click on it as if it was there). And any time I open the menu, it "stays" open. I also only have a black background, no matter which image I choose as a background image.
I'm thinking it's just my video card and not enough memory, but it was working find in F16. I have tried yum update several times but it says everything is up to date.
Only does this on the console login. If I RDP in, everything is fine.

What video card do you have? There were some issues with the some Nvidia Geforce 5 + 6 + 7 series cards.

Re: Upgrade issue - F16 to F17
It's a "legacy" PCI Remote Insight Board from Compaq (it's that old!). Keep meaning to buy a new one, but PCI are hard to find for a cheap price.
Chipset is detected as a VESA: MACH64GM (32-bit)
Not sure what that means, haven't heard of that chipset before...

Re: Upgrade issue - F16 to F17
That is an older ATI graphics chipset.
I'm not too familiar with the ATI issues. I know there are some, but not sure what they are or how to solve them since I don't have any ATI cards.
Possibly someone else can jump in and help out
