Microsoft’s Downfall: Inside the Executive E-mails and Cannibalistic Culture That Felled a Tech Giant

YES! that's microshaft.

The comments there are funny, whole bunch of balmer's butt buddies going to ms defence.

I also don't get their line about wimo/wice/whateverthehelltheywanttocallit being in a "lead" at any time. They were always in palm's shadow and were rightfully despised well before palm shot themselves in the head and let the sucky-product-leader RIM waltz in with their worse than useless junk and take over the [poorly] connected PDA business.

It is REALLY telling that they didn't/couldn't even best RIM. RIM was GARBAGE from day 1.

I don't think that MS is "felled" just yet.

Nope. They aren't. But ... they're working on it awfully hard. <....>

Nope

Though it would make for an interesting business case study to see how long a lumbering business giant (Microsoft) can play catch - up and continue to support and release failed project (product) after project before complete implosion

PC platform growth is not as much as it used to be. But death or implosion of MS is exaggerated.

Even if MS fails massively with windows 8, they can burn some cash for almost next 2-3 failed releases.

Hardware vendors don't see the alternate OS options as a viable option.

Innovative UI design was missing from MS for a long time. It just started to hurt them.

C'mon, guys. Seriously. I don't know a durn thing about Windows 8®, but Windows 7® really isn't that bad. If you had never known (or desired) the freedom/complications of Linux, or the simplicity/comforting lock-in of Mac, you really wouldn't have a helluvalot to complain about. Especially if you go with Open source applications. (GIMP, LibreOffice, Firefox, Thunderbird, Blender, etc.)

I believe it's the other way around. Linux is playing catch up to Windows.

Not really, except desktop platform.

I have nothing to care about MS but I hate to see good ol' Ballmer go. He always gives me laughs.

Even in the desktop.

Remember - what MS reports is SOLD counts. That means somebody had to pay for it.

Linux is used - and used a LOT, but isn't reported by "market value" counts.

Yeah, Ballmer and his Linux is a disease mentality is the best thing going for Linux promotion and Windows demise.

Dan I would humbly disagree with the latest releases (post XP) of Windows - not being so bad. To qualify, I do not use WIndows and I never had a Windows machine; so my observations are from friends and various companies I have helped out. There seems to be a real push in software that is written for a company's specific need and that it is not OS specific. Especially with the release of Vista (at least locally), companies are pushing for software across platforms. The best example of this I can think of is a local Architech firm that uses linux on it's servers, ipads in the field (which instantly update to all modifications on design plans) and a variety of in house workstations that have different OS's. All these different machines work together with common software (cross platform). Gone are the days of a Windows house (servers, workstations, portable devices all WIndows).

Totally my observation, but I think Microsoft's poor OS releases have been a plus for Linux and other OS's. With the push for cross platform applications, and the introduction of different devices and OS's into the work environment, their is a huge interest in Linux (and Open Source). I really do think Microsoft is slipping. At least in these parts, there is no Wow factor associated with Microsoft, it is just something there (legacy) until it can be replaced by this new cool device or application (which has not been Microsoft). I think too, you see the desperation of Microsoft, with the hint of future hardware lock in (will not work with anything but Microsoft). If Microsoft can not out innovate, compete or produce a good product - might as well give no choice - Windows or nothing. Which I would offer to Kona, is Microsoft's biggest undoing (please, please, please do not ever leave Microsoft Mr. Ballmer).

Re: Microsoft’s Downfall: Inside the Cannibalistic Culture That Fel

Very good points there, BBQdave.

I do believe that the gaining popularity of tablets and smartphones have introduced people to other operating systems other than Windows, and they are finding out that they have been getting ripped off all these years.

Kinda.. "I have been paying how many hundreds of dollars for Windows, and this little tablet running "free" Android does much more??"
