nsswitch.conf and wins not working under fedora 17

I recently upgraded my dell XPS 15z t fedora 17 from fedora 16 and noticed that I could no longer lookup the samba boxes on my network which were using nmbd to broadcast their netbios names. I still have the wins entry in the nsswitch.conf hosts line:

hosts: files wins dns

however I cannot see the machines if I use ping for example. can anyone say what has changed. I also installed FC17 fresh on another machine and the same is true.

Fixed on my upgraded FC16 to FC17 machine. It seems that I was looking at the wrong copy of the nsswitch.conf file when I was trying to debug the situation, and the upgrade had re-written the old nsswitch.conf file. It works ok on the upgraded machine but is still a problem on the freah install machine.
