Good bye Linux
After a very brief 10 year adventure with linux, the last 1 with Fedora, I'm afraid I must go. It has been a pleasure. From ubuntu to debian to finally, fedora, then marriage, then I'm afriad the wife says linux must go and between it's virtues and windows' vices I must choose windows and the wife.
If you must know, it was microsoft office that did her (and me) in. Well played Gates. A virtual machine runnin office 2010 seamlessely was not seamless enough, as shortcuts created to mapped network drives failed to account for certain corner cases (damn you flash drives!), and causes difficulties that could not be overcome by my limited knowledge.
Despite being made aware of the cost of OEM versions of windows 7, (none of our 4 computers have come with windows pre-installed) it is goodbye Linux.
Of course, libre office will remain as who really needs to spend $300 per computer for an email client and word processor. And of course I will hide a small dual boot partition holding debianfor those apps I can't bring myself to pay for (hello photorec).
Let this be a warning to those who think the days of the linux desktop have come. My wife has no problems at work on Windows 7 and despite being able to browse facebook and use the internet on home on Fedora 17 with Gnome's "super simple interface", as well as my own clever seamless rdp hacks to enable office to work on the desktop, it was not enough.
Be satisfied with the internet, and supercomputers and now phones and tablts linux, the desktop is forvever beyond your reach.

I wish you well with your choice of OS, but the above statement is very, very narrow and, IMHO, wrong.

LOL, "warning"...well, I don't think the main goal should be to reach these "days", let's say linux reachs the 10% mark of the desktops, linux would've become a nice target for malware.
Don't get me wrong, would be nice if more users use linux, but not too much.

Re: Good bye Linux
Hmmm...have you really thought this "choice" through carefully?
Fedora: Fresh, cutting-edge, new every few months, FREE, handles all tasks seamlessly, no problem accessing pron....
Wife: Older every day, EXPENSIVE, needs help with many chores, gets ticked if access pron....
Sure, there'll be tears and the loss of 50% of your assets, but F18'll be coming out and it's CUTTING EDGE.
Or, more realistically, just get your own machine and let her have Windows. Peace at a reasonable price.

Re: Good bye Linux
I know a lot of people who do not want to hear about Linux although they never saw a Linux installation. They constantly ask for help to clean and repair their beloved windows machines but refuses to accept al least a dual booting pc. There are many reasons besides, for maybe 15%, who can not switch because of no alternative program or not to easy to complete the tasks as in Windows.
Two weeks ago i heard that someone has refused to install and use LibreOffice for fear that it was illegal. Well, if you do not pay for the software it must be someting wrong and not to be trusted.
I will say only that my wife use linux and only linux because that is the single option for her and when it is something that she do not know i give her a helping hand. She never thought to fight linux from a such radical position.
Anyway i think that the value of an OS and the public perception about that are two different stories. Like all other things in our life.

Re: Good bye Linux
Ha! That's a funny one. My wife loves Fedora 17, and would not own a Windows computer for money, she says.
She has a Toshiba Satellite laptop, and with Windows on it, the thing runs hot, freezes a lot, crashes, and takes forever to shut down. When she got it it has Windows 7 Ultimate installed. After a few days messing with it, she finally brought it to me and commanded that I install Fedora on it, and customize it just like mine. Have fun putting money in a giant corporate pocket, friend.

Re: Good bye Linux
Without knowing the OP's situation, I wouldn't presume to judge. I will say though that my wife, basically a Mac user, and a friend of hers, also basically a Mac user, can very often get by with Linux desktops without too much confusion. I set it up for them, including Japanese input, and they are the sort who wouldn't really google for things.
Regardless, good luck with it all, and we hope to see you again.

Re: Good bye Linux
Sad to hear.
With some research and pre-recognition of the needs of the user in a previous step,
it is possible to set up a device according to the needs of the user (friend/wife).
I had set up the laptop of a friend with F15 LXDE, he likes it that much more, he wont even let me upgrade it to F17 or change to a more 'stable' distro.
This said, have you thought about WINE running M$ Office?
This would let your wife select m$ office applications from the common 'start' menu, and obviously, some research for accessing your usb flash drives, though i never had issues with it.
Hope this helps.

I'm not making judgement on any person specifically, but there are people that just love evil.
In short: free will.

Yeah, it would have been fine if he had just left it as needing to do certain things in Windows. But then he added that ridiculous statement along with the "Let this be a warning" nonsense, so the gloves are off. I think it's more of a warning that his wife is going to be bossing him around, and that equality in that marriage will be forever beyond his reach. I mean, the guy is so scared of his wife that he actually has to hide a Linux partition from her! Poor guy. I'm so glad my girlfriend loves Linux.
Looking at his post closer, some of what he says doesn't make sense. For example, he says that running Office 2010 in a VM under Linux was a problem, yet he then goes on to say that he'll be getting LibreOffice for his Windows computers. Huh? Couldn't he have used LibreOffice to begin with, if apparently that is acceptable as an alternative to Office 2010? I think this guy's trolling. I've never understood the need for people to make these grand announcements of leaving Linux (or a particular distro) anyway. These are people desperate for attention, who I guess want us to beg and plead with them not to leave. I say "Be gone, troll!"

Re: Good bye Linux
My 2 cents more. I have been using Linux Fedora since around February. With the help of a good friend, gadgetwhiz, I was able to download, install and upload all the updates, set up advance settings etc. Then a month ago we upgraded to Fedora 17 which is the best OS I have ever used. I would never have been able to do it alone
To go back to Windoze for me would be a catastrope.
My husband and I each have our own desktops, he has his Windoze and I have my Fedora. and loving it.

This is a tale worthy of a Greek tragedy. What makes this worse is that there is no structure in place to help those Linux users who feel they are compelled to return to using windows . However, maybe posting on this forum is a cry for help. Then again this might be the work of an MS anarchist
