Static Ip on Fedora 15

Can someone point me to directionsthat explain how to setup a static IP on Fedora 15?

I searched the forums but everything I have found and tried did not work or i was not able to do because things like the save button was not active.

Re: Static Ip on Fedora 15

You forgot to mention that it only works if you are not using NetworkManager...

Re: Static Ip on Fedora 15

??

I have been using static network address on every version of Fedora since F9, and I have used NetworkManager on all of those versions as well.

Static network addresses work just fine with NetworkManager.

Re: Static Ip on Fedora 15

I haven't seen them work since F14 UNLESS you set them up using the Network Manager GUI, and even then it can get screwed up such that the GUI can't repair them. I gave up when NM started putting the default route on the wrong interface (I have two wired+3 VMs) and wouldn't fix it without disabling one of the interfaces.

Network manager doesn't use the ifcfg-xxx files anymore.

Re: Static Ip on Fedora 15

I set mine up using the ifcfg files. I actually just copied them from previous version of Fedora when I did the install.

For example, here is one of my ifcfg files

Code:
NM_CONTROLLED="yes"
BOOTPROTO=none
DEVICE="p33p2"
ONBOOT=yes
HWADDR=6C:62:6D:7C:0C:31
TYPE=Ethernet
IPADDR0=192.168.1.20
PREFIX0=24
GATEWAY0=192.168.1.254
DNS1=192.168.1.254
DEFROUTE=yes
IPV4_FAILURE_FATAL=yes
IPV6INIT=no
NAME="p33p2"
But then again, I make sure to specify which of mine is the default route.

Really the only issue I have had (and only with F17) is that udev keeps changing my device name. Like the adapter on install was p33p1, and now it is p33p2. It's happened on 3 different machines now.

Re: Static Ip on Fedora 15

Mine just failed, and using the GUI to define the network only sort of worked - and no ifcfg files were created.

Since I was also having trouble with the VM networking (VMs couldn't see each other, even though they are all on the same network), I dropped NM, and started "network". The ifcfg files (with name changes) worked right off. In addition, my VMs could see each other.

and the default route was established correctly.

JP you forgot to mention that you are a whiney whiner who exaggerates every negative and ignores every positives of any Fedora issue - IOW a fedora-hater-troll. I say this despite the fact that you are knowledgeable and POTENTIALLY a great positive contributor to this forum - instead you choose to kvetch, kvetch kvetch instead of contributing.
"The sea was angry that day, my friends. Like an old man trying to send back soup in a deli."

JP's constant stream of 'doesn't work' 'can't do' negative comments really has to be considered trollish.

I use dynamically assigned IPs. Yet I was able to right-click the NM icon, select wireless, IPv4 manual, edit connections, add the IP, mask, route, DNS "SAVE" and set the connection and BOOM - a static IP.

Well mine just succeeded and the contents are in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-Auto_`ESSID`

We've established that JP lacks the basic wherewithal to configure a wifi via NM.
Why are you posting your failures here JP ? It doesn't help the OP.
Why are you piggybacking your failures on threads where people are not hindered by your inabilities ?

If YOU, JP have a problem you want addressed start your own thread and ask for help.
If you are just here to detract from helping people - then why don't you ....
never mind.

Re: Static Ip on Fedora 15

On this f15 laptop, I use and re-configure static IP with the Network Manager gui (from the nm icon 'edit connections') I haven't had any problems with setting up static IP's.

Re: Static Ip on Fedora 15

Steve, I didn't need help. I googled and found that the fix was to disable network manager.

Tried that, succeeded. Doing so even fixed something I wasn't looking for.

Done.

And complaining about the messenger is just stupid. I call them as I see them.

Oh, and I don't have a wireless. And if you had bothered to read, I said that NM seems to work with wireless reasonably well.
