A few questions about Gnome 3

Hello all. I just had a few questions about Gnome 3 that were really bugging me.

#1. Call me old school, but I really like the GL Matrix screen saver, so I downloaded all the XScreenSaver stuff needed to do this. When I start the XScreenSaver, it turns off the Gnome Screensaver and automatic screen lock, which is exactly what I want to happen. But as soon as I reboot, Gnome Screensaver is running again and XScreenSaver is turned off. Is there any way to have it run XScreenSaver by default, so I don't have to stop Gnome Screen Saver and start XScreenSaver every time I reboot?

#2. Is it possible to remove the "Lock Screen" and "Switch User" options from the Gnome user menu?

#3. Is it possible to add "Shutdown" and "Restart" options below the "Suspend" option? It's getting really annoying having to open a terminal every time I want to reboot.

If you guys could point me to a good place that talks about Gnome 3 configuration, or give me some pointers, it would be very much appreciated! I really enjoy using Gnome 3.x, but those few small changes would improve things greatly for me.

Re: A few questions about Gnome 3

Yes. I can directly point you to the GNOME shell extensions page to add "Shutdown" option. Use the "Alternative Status Menu" extension.

I have never tried to get rid of those since I kind of use the lock screen/switch user at times. I will see if something can be done.

Cheers.

Re: A few questions about Gnome 3

Cool thanks! I got the "Alternative Status Menu" that adds a Power Off option, which is a big improvement. I also used to Gnome Tweak Tool to add the date to my clock. I could probably live with starting XScreenSaver when I need it, but is there a way to set the screen lock timeout on the Gnome Screensaver? I think it's set for 10 minutes, I want to set it for at least 60 minutes. I can't find a menu or option that changes it anywhere.

Yes there is. Assuming default setup, click on the username (top right corner), Choose System Settings. In the window that appears, choose "Brightness and Lock". There you can change when the screensaver kicks in.

Run "gnome-session-properties" and edit the "Screensaver" entry.

I see you've already solved this with an extension, but also holding down Alt will replace "Suspend" with "Power Off...".

Re: A few questions about Gnome 3

Awesome! Thanks for the input guys!

nonamedotc, I didn't even think about the brightness and lock page.

Gareth Jones, I actually like the alt option better now that I know about it, it seems more elegant. I've since removed the extension. And thanks for the tip about the gnome-session-properties!
