F17 How to copy files to USB stick?

I'm running F17 64-bit Xfce.

How do I copy files from the hard drive to a USB stick with Thunar?

Either the paste function is disabled or the file looks to be copied, but when the stick is reinserted it's not there after all.

So I installed Nautilus, but the same happens.

I can, though, delete files already on the sticks.

I don't remember any such problems with F16.

Had a similar problem and used gnome-commander as root, checked and changed permissions and ownership of files and got write permission on the usb drive. No problems after that with any file manager...

Not sure if it is this straight forward, but after connecting the USB stick, you have to mount it. You should be able to add and remove files.

A tip (that I got from the forum) on removing files from a USB stick: select the file(s) or folder(s) then SHIFT + DEL will completely remove.

It's shown as mounted.

My work-around is to open the originating program and save-as directly to the stick.

Re: F17 How to copy files to USB stick?

Check df to see where it's mounted and then use the cp command to copy the file

Code:
df -m

cp filename /media/somewhere

ls -l /media/somewhere/filename
Do you get an error message other than a cannot preserve ownership warning?

No error messages.
So if I want to copy files to a stick in F17 I have to use the command line? Okay. I see.

You don't have to. He is saying that if you post the output of those commands, we can help.

Do you eject the drive in Thunar before removing it? This makes sure the copied contents are really written to it.

Format usb drive to FAT32 and read-write away
And if you format to FAT32, you can read-write with Linux, Mac and Windows.
