help me to rescue files after fedora 15 crash, pls!
Hi comm!
I had fedora 15 on a second partition in my HDD. After a blue screen crash while using skype in xp I neither can access to my "world files" in fedora. It's something that has to do with pci.sys file missing, chkdsk and I tried with as many guides and recomms as I found googling but unsuccessfuly (and this is not the proper place for this bit otherwise than a reference). Case is, when triying to access to (fedora partition) what I got is:
Quote:
Dropping to debug shell
sh: can't access tty; job control turned off
dracut:/#
|
From a fedora-16 installed on a 32gb-pendriver I could access and backup files from my win-xp (except a program (damn it!) that by license questions I cannot reinstall if removing. They have sent to me a patch for doing it but as I cannot open my winXP environment I still don't know how to do it ). However I couldn't do that with my files on fedora and I need to.
Would anyone know to give me a clue?. Please. I'd appreciate it so much. I want to copy my files under home to somewhere.
Txell.

Do what? How did you attempt to access the files? Did you use a terminal and the command line? I think that's what you need to do.

You still aren't saying what you did to get the error message. The message you quoted looks like an error from trying to boot Fedora. Is that what produced it?
Boot from a liveCd, open a terminal, become root and see if you can detect your files with the usual command line commands such as
(this uses the letter "l", not the number "1")
If possible, post your results.
The above commands merely report information. Don't do any command that copies, writes or moves files until you've educated yourself about its effects.

Re: help me to rescue files after fedora 15 crash, pls!
Hi Tashirosgt,
Exactly, my friend. The quoted mess is what I got when trying to boot fedora-15 installed as 2nd partition on my HDD. That rescue, I posted earlier I could perform of some files located on the XP partition was done from a live fedora-16 installed on a usb memory stick, but I couldn't do same with files located on the 2nd partition because of a permission issue (see this thread
I will try anyway with your recommendation and post with news,
Thanks again.
Txe.

Re: help me to rescue files after fedora 15 crash, pls!
See if you can read your Linux files by activating the volume group and mounting the volume with your linux root directory on it.
Activate the volumne group.
Code:
vgchange vg_txe -a y
Create a mount point
Code:
mkdir /media/myfiles
Mount the root directory
Code:
mount /dev/vg_txe/vg_root /media/myfiles
( If that doesn't work try using
Code:
mount /dev/mapper/vg_txe-lv_root /media/myfiles
)
If you get the files mounted, see if you can list and read them.

Re: help me to rescue files after fedora 15 crash, pls!
That's distubing. It looks like a freshly formatted partition.
Try
and see if it reports how much of /dev/sda3 is used.

Re: help me to rescue files after fedora 15 crash, pls!
That report shows that /dev/mapper/vg_txe-lv_root should have data in it. At the moment, I don't understand why you can't see the files when they are mounted on /media/myfiles. Do
Code:
du -h /media/myfiles
and see if it shows about 9G of files exist.
Is there anything complicated about your filesystems? Do you use RAID? or encryption?

Re: help me to rescue files after fedora 15 crash, pls!
Hi Tahirosgt,
It's just a normal installation, my good friend, a fedora-15 on a 2nd partition in my laptop HDD.
I tried with the < du -h code > and below I post what I got but I think it was a bigger one report that I can't see completely but the part which fits in the terminal screen (I was after a parsing screen report unsuccessfuly, I need to learn some more I see..) Here the part I can copy and paste..
PD. Plus Here I only allowed to pos till 1000 ch long,

Re: help me to rescue files after fedora 15 crash, pls!
Try
Code:
du -c -h /media/myfiles/lost+found
At the very end of the output there should be a grand total of bytes in the directory. If this total is about 9G then I'd say your files have been put in the lost+found directory.

I could see my files sir, even I could cd to ~home/txe and ls command with list my home dir(s) enterely. I was about make a "cp -r" or smething so that to copy them to somewhere but the system got froze. Perhaps that about opening another storage place where to locate them was too much or too long loop, I dunno.
Now the system cannot even recognize the HDD when rebooting. Just as if it were taken out, it doesn't exist anymore.
I was about to get it. Now I have nothing.

You probably have a hardware problem. Are your BIOS settings still correct? Does the hard drive even spins up. On a desktop machine, you can open the case and listen to hard drive to tell that. What model hard drive is it?

Re: help me to rescue files after fedora 15 crash, pls!
when looking at BIOS, the only different setting I can note is that line saying HDD none. As if no were any HDD installed. I got a Hitachi Travelstar (SATA) 2.5 inch. 5400 rpm.
