You tried doing usermod -G wheel -a martin, logging out and logging back in?

Pretty much everything else is overcomplicating it.

Please try doing your su to root then


grep wheel /etc/sudoers

and post the result.

If you get back the line I mentioned about %wheel ALL=(ALL) ALL

Then please type


groups


If you are in the group wheel, all is good. If you aren't then I suspect you mistyped the command I gave you.

There are various possibilities, but I suspect that the results of those two commands will help us clear things up.

It appears I just managed something stupid. I locked my own account of my home folder.

Changing ownership back from root to the account was solved quite easily, but I want to understand how that happened.

Trying to repair something else, I followed the instruction of some guide on some page, and I used the chown -R command at some point, which I later learned has something to do with user-rights or something like that.

What exactly does chown -R do?


Also it seems I can no longer mount drives as that user.

Look at the man page for chown, I think it's pretty clear, even for newcomers.

In case it isn't, the very short answer is is that it CHanges OWNership (hence the chown).

The -R stands for Recursive. So, if I have a directory mydir and a file in it, myfile and do chown me mydir, the ownership on the file may remain what it was before. If I do chown -R me mydir then the owner of the directory and every file in it will be user me.

Okay, so apparently I did that to something in /home/me and home/me became owned by root. Okay, that's easy.

Now I noticed that not only can I not manually mount drives, I don't even get them listed in the system informations. Best thing would probably be to set the permission rights for the account to the standard settings for a new account, so everything should be nice and clean again (only repeating the step to enable sudo needed ^^). Could that be done?

Wait, one step back. root is also effected, must be a different reason.
