How to use prozilla with yum
Dear friends,
I am using fedora17. I want acceleration in yumming process.
as yum is plugin based...Is there any way to use prozilla ( or any other download accelerator i.e. aria2c and axel) with yum package manager.
So that i can speedup the process of updating/installing the packages.
just like in ubuntu/debian based system apt-proz and apt-fast kind of thing.
regards,
Arun Maurya

Re: How to use prozilla with yum
There is yum presto. I think this is installed by default. However I have found downloads very quick. Are you seeing very slow downloads?

Re: How to use prozilla with yum
i think presto is the patch kind...not the download accelerator type.
please correct me if i am wrong...
I know it will increase load on the yum servers..but it can speed up the process two three times.

Re: How to use prozilla with yum
presto is a hybrid i think. It is not an accelerator you are correct, it just downloads the difference between your current rpm and teh one you want. I am not sure that you can use an accelerator.
As I said though, are you seeing it being slow or are you just wanting faster speed for speeds sake.

Re: How to use download accelerator with yum
Very sad dear friends..it seems that fedora community is shrinking..nobody is there to think about this for fedora users.
I love fedora..as this is the only distro which provides latest technology to its users..
i am unable to understand when ubuntu/debian can do such acceleration in apt-get, why fedora yum can't do.

Do not assume because your one question has not been answered that the community is shrinking.
You still have not answered my question, why do you need to do this? Most speeds are fast enough, and the improvement through download accelerators is only really that good on very slow connections in my experience.
You are also not considering presto properly. Most of the time I see at least a 4-5 times speed up as only a quarter to a fifth of the rpm needs to be downloaded. Delta rpms can provide a much bigger speed increase than any download accelerator.
There has been work on parrallel downloads in yum but delta rpms are still providing huge speed boost over apt and prozilla. http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?p=1577165

Re: How to use prozilla with yum
thanks adunaic.
yes i am working on slow connection..I am already using presto. but as for as i know presto is useful when the package is already installed and it is being updated. Not for the new package installation.

Arun

Yes it does only work when the packages is already downloaded. I would still rather sacrafice time on the first install of a package and have it be quicker for each update (of which there are a few) than have it slower on all of them.

Hello arun_maurya
Yes there is one which is called: " yum-fast-downloader" and it can be added as a repository to automate future updates.
