Re: "Light" Distro?
some of here may laugh but i advise easypeasy1.6.
I recently came into possession of a old hp netbook and for curiosity, I installed easypeasy 1.6 on netbbok. It took some 400MB+ updates being based on old ubuntu10.04 lucid. Afterwords I even installed msoffice with wine. I created dvd of my installation with remastersys. (i have now three different live-dvd iso files of various stages of installation which even contains songs of choices) But the result is extraordinary. It works perfectly. Netbook interface is very good. It lacked some applications but easy to resolve from software centre.
Now i have three system at home
1. Desktop (i3/4gb ram) running windows7+Fedora17- Games spin(also installed libreoffice and lot of other application including virtualbox. Running perfectly)
2. laptop (dualcore/4gb ram) running windows7+fedora17. running perfectly.
3. netbook-(--/512mb ram) running exclusive easypeasy1.6 (windows xp in virtualbox). running excellent
and nothing to say about computers at workplace. that for another episode
so in end for your configurations- my advice- try easypeasy1.6 and get surprised

Re: "Light" Distro?
@sea -
Well I tried your suggestions. I'm able to add aps to the bar, yet I was curious if there is a way to move them around. I also tried your suggestions with the clock. It works yet it shows the seconds. Is there some other code to get rid of the seconds?
Thanks for the help!
@Dan -
Thanks for you help. I did try most of what you suggested. By the way it looks like I'm using F17.
@Gareth Jones -
No error codes from any program when trying to play WAV files. A Firefox add on, Webmail Notifier, will not play a custom WAV file for email notification. This same ectension has no issues in Windows. Curious.
Some updates:
Well I had to reinstall the system 3 times. I messed up the first system somehow because it would not boot the next day. The second time around I think the same thing happened. Anyhow, after reinstalling Fedora and using AutoPlus, thank you Dangermouse, everything is good!
I installed WINE thinking I could install and use MS Office. No go. WINE works great, Office just will not install. Come to find out AbiWord and GNUmetric can save in MS format so I don't need MS office. Just as well as the Linux versions for Office are easier to use.
Confused about what music player to use. Amarok will not run so what do you all recommend for a iTunes like player? I'm using VLC for other multimedia playback.
Thanks for the help!

Re: "Light" Distro?
Fedora 17 minimal install should do. ArchLinux would do. I did a minimal install of Arch with only Openbox installed, Opera, mplayer. No login manager, no GTK, no firefox or any other beefy browser. Amazingly responsive. Very fast boot and shutdown (shutdown now is extremely fast in Fedora too).

Re: "Light" Distro?
Bit of an update here. I'm still using Fedora, I haven't reverted back to Windows. I find everyday that Linux is growing on me as I am learning new things about how Linux works, how to install or remove programs, ect.
Here's the programs I've been using and enjoying:
Browser: Firefox 12 with 6 extensions and a Firefox 3.6 theme
Email client: Thunderbird 12
Music player: Audacious
IRC client: Xchat
Office: AbiWord, Gnumeric
Editor: Leafpad
Burning software: K3B
DVD backup: Handbrake
Media player: VLC
I was still curious about how to adjust the clock to a 12 hour format with the seconds showing and if there was a way to move stuff on the taskbar around. So far no crashes, no issues. I was also wondering if I should update the system. If so, how?
BTW where is the program that shows what hardware is installed located at in LXDE?
Thanks for the help.

Re: "Light" Distro?
how about adding tiny core to the shopping list
on LXDE to change the clock format, right clk on the clock and edit away
you can get a list of the variables with "man date"

Re: "Light" Distro?
About moving the apps in the launcher, just where you add/remove them, there are 2 buttons below with arrows.
@ Pat, i had looked at the man date page, but the clock setting (of lxde) seems to be somewhat diffrent

Weird, they are in the middle between the lists...
As you see in screenshot.

Re: "Light" Distro?
Got it, thanks! I also got one of my Windows games to run under WINE. Sweet!

I don't think Scientific in stock form is exactly lightweight due to using GNOME 2 as the DE, but I'm sure you can build it up from a minimal install to be relatively lightweight, like you can with Fedora or Ubuntu.

#!'s great, it works on pretty much ANYTHING. The PC I have it installed on is 13 years old.

Re: "Light" Distro?
Can't recall the last time I had this much fun using an old computer. I can't imagine how Fedora would act on a newer system. Such a relief knowing I don't have too many viruses to worry about or having to defrag my hard drive.
Thanks for the help guys.

I'd second that. It's a debian based distro and is lightning quick on my Eeepc 4g surf. I am pretty sure that all the codecs are there by default and the forum is friendly and very helpful. It has a dark theme out of the box which I like but of course you can customise if not to your taste. Give it a go I really think you'll be suprised how fast you can get that hardware working

Re: "Light" Distro?
I've got Fedora LXDE running really fast as it is, think I'll stick to this until I get some other hard drive.

My running LXDE does no indexing...
