Samba nmb problem I think

Hi
I've had to do reinstall on both machines, most all back and running but I have a samba problem
testparm shows no problem with the smb.conf.
running:-

[richard@g8jvm ~]$ smbtree
Enter richard's password:
WORKGROUP
\\COMPUTER_1
\\COMPUTER_1\Printer Microsoft XPS Document Writer
\\COMPUTER_1\C$ Default share
\\COMPUTER_1\ADMIN$ Remote Admin
\\COMPUTER_1\SharedDocs
\\COMPUTER_1\print$ Printer Drivers
\\COMPUTER_1\IPC$ Remote IPC
JVMNET
\\G8JVM Samba Server Version 3.6.5-85.fc16

G*JVM is the machine I'm logged into with shh. WORKGROUP is the winxp thing running in a VM on this laptop.
[richard@g8jvm ~]$ smbclient -L G8JVM
Enter richard's password:
Connection to G8JVM failed (Error NT_STATUS_UNSUCCESSFUL)

I find that nmb has to be started manually even though enable after a reboot..
Nothingh is showin in winxp of G8JVM, I know the groups are different at the moment, I'll hammer winxp into submission until it changed the workgroup.

The only log entry I can find in /var/log/samba is in log.nmbd saying G8JVM is master browser.
Googling on NT_STATUS_UNSUCCESSFUL hasn't yeilded anything useful, nor have previous postings I can find..
Help[ appreciated please

Re: Samba nmb problem I think

I noticed this too and found an error in /var/log/samba/log.nmbd with something about a socket that couldn't get opened or something similar (currently the log file is empty somehow).
I played with the "interfaces =" line of smb.conf a bit but to no avail.
Easiest workaround is to put the manual start command in rc.local to start it at boot (not tested yet).

Re: Samba nmb problem I think

I came across changing the order in this statement in smb.conf, on a ubuntu list
name resolve order = lmhosts wins bcast host.

I couldn't find" name resolve order" in smb.conf, but pasted it in anyway.
restarted samba, and smbclient -L g8jvm behaves as it should.

has something changed in samba on configuring name resolution, or have I screwed up ?

thanks

Re: Samba nmb problem I think

That looks like working around the problem of nmb not starting at boot.
For my it now does start after commenting out the "interface = lo eth0 1.2.3.4" line in smb.conf.
