VLC player zlib 1.2.5.4 issue

Hi folks,

First post here at the Fedora forums since switching from Ubuntu.

I'm hoping someone will be able to offer a solution to an issue I am currently having. Specifically, I am attempting to install VLC media player within a recently installed version of Fedora 16 (Verne, Kernel: 3.3.4-3.fc16.i686, Gnome 3.2.1).

While installing I encounter the following error message:

I have attempted to manually locate the zlib-1.2.5-4.fc16 package online, however, I can only find zlib-1.2.5-4.fc16.i686 (which when I try to installl, tells me it needs zlib-1.2.5-4.fc16).

This problem also prevented me from installing google chromium - despite having followed all necessary steps in tutorials correctly.

Any help is much appreciated, and as always, I'm willing to offer any additional information you might need to help diagnose this problem.

All the best,
Farsight.

I don't know why it's trying to install that version of minizip. It should bring in package minizip-1.2.5-6.fc16.i686 from the "updates" repo. Did you "disable" the "updates" repo?

Hi Pablo,

Thank you for your reply. I ran the command:
Code:
yum repolist
for which I got this output:

I'm still very new to Fedora and learning my way around the system. Perhaps you can advise me if I've accidentally disabled a particular repo, and if so, how I go about reactivating it?

Re: VLC player zlib 1.2.5.4 issue

You can probably do that from your GUI package manager, but since I only use yum at the command line, I'm not sure where in the menu that would be. You can switch to root and bring up a text editor and edit the file:

/etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-updates.repo

In the first section:
Code:
[updates]
name=Fedora $releasever - $basearch - Updates
failovermethod=priority
#baseurl=http://download.fedoraproject.org/pub/fedora/linux/updates/$releasever/$basearch/
mirrorlist=https://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/metalink?repo=updates-released-f$releasever&arch=$basearch
enabled=1
gpgcheck=1
gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-fedora-$basearch
change the "enabled=0" to "enabled=1".
Temporarily, from the command line, you could do, as root:
Code:
yum --enablerepo=updates install vlc

Re: VLC player zlib 1.2.5.4 issue

Hi again Pablo,

Before I go ahead and create a new file called fedora-updates.repo, can I check whether you meant for me to alter the fedora.repo file? Presently I have only the fedora.repo file in the /etc/yum.repos.d/ directory.

For the benefit of others (and so you can check if I'm doing something wrong), if I was going to create the fedora-update.repo file with the aim of installing VLC, I believe I would do it as follows:

1) change to root user

Code:
su
Insert root password, then:

2) create the fedora-updates.repo file in /etc/yum.repos.d/ directory

Code:
 cd /etc/yum.repos.d/
cat > fedora-updates.repo
Followed by pasting the text you have given:

Code:
[updates]
name=Fedora $releasever - $basearch - Updates
failovermethod=priority
#baseurl=http://download.fedoraproject.org/pub/fedora/linux/updates/$releasever/$basearch/
mirrorlist=https://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/metalink?repo=updates-released-f$releasever&arch=$basearch
enabled=1
gpgcheck=1
gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-fedora-$basearch
I'd then attempt to update my system with:

Code:
 yum update
3) Finally coming to the stage where I can attempt to install VLC media player via:

Code:
 yum install VLC
Hopefully my basic understanding of Fedora is at least partially right.

All the best,
Farsight.

Pablo, thank you so very much for your help. From what you provide and what I posted above, I now have a fully functional VLC media player.

Re: VLC player zlib 1.2.5.4 issue

OK... well, I didn't know you were "missing" the fedora-updates.repo file. I had assumed you had somehow set it to disabled. You now have the "important" entry of that file. Here is the full contents of the fedora-updates.repo:
Code:
[updates]
name=Fedora $releasever - $basearch - Updates
failovermethod=priority
#baseurl=http://download.fedoraproject.org/pub/fedora/linux/updates/$releasever/$basearch/
mirrorlist=https://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/metalink?repo=updates-released-f$releasever&arch=$basearch
enabled=1
gpgcheck=1
gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-fedora-$basearch

[updates-debuginfo]
name=Fedora $releasever - $basearch - Updates - Debug
failovermethod=priority
#baseurl=http://download.fedoraproject.org/pub/fedora/linux/updates/$releasever/$basearch/debug/
mirrorlist=https://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/metalink?repo=updates-released-debug-f$releasever&arch=$basearch
enabled=0
gpgcheck=1
gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-fedora-$basearch

[updates-source]
name=Fedora $releasever - Updates Source
failovermethod=priority
#baseurl=http://download.fedoraproject.org/pub/fedora/linux/updates/$releasever/SRPMS/
mirrorlist=https://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/metalink?repo=updates-released-source-f$releasever&arch=$basearch
enabled=0
gpgcheck=1
gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-fedora-$basearch

Re: VLC player zlib 1.2.5.4 issue

Thanks for that extra bit of information Pablo, you've been a real help!

I have now changed the file the only way I currently know how (to delete and then remake - sorry, its not perfect but it's all I know after 2 days):

Code:
cd /etc/yum.repos.d
rm -r fedora-updates.repo
Code:
cat > fedora-updates.repo
Then paste what you put above.

All the best,
Farsight.

Re: VLC player zlib 1.2.5.4 issue

You could have just opened the /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-updates.repo file in a text editor, then copied the missing sections as I posted from the open web-browser, then pasted that into the open text file below the existing text, save and close the editor. No need to have deleted the file first and create a new one.

You don't need to use the -r (recursive) option (and probably shouldn't) when deleting (removing) a single file.
