cant get wireless to work

hello, this is my first time posting in this forum, so bare with me.
I am running Fedora 16 on a TOSHIBA Satellite C660, but I cant get the broadcom wireless drivers to install. i have tried using the terminal via yum install, or installing with the software packages,but the result is the same. is it hardware problems or software?
because on any other machine I install fedora, it automatically comes with drivers.

I am running F16 Xfce (64-bit) on a Toshiba Satellite C655 with no trouble. Everything worked out of the box. I did not need to install additional wireless drivers, wireless support was included in the F16 install.

Toshiba is usually very friendly hardware to Linux, so not sure why you are having trouble with wireless

I think the current broadcom driver in Fedora is at:

515552 Apr 21 09:11 /lib/modules/3.3.2-6.fc16.x86_64/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/b43/b43.ko

so on your machine, confirm you have that file, if so then confirm it's loaded:

lsmod | grep b43

if that shows nothing, then try to load it:

su -c "modprobe b43"

if the lsmod command from before now shows it loaded, try to use the wireless

i first tried the lsmod command, and it did not show,then I tried the second command, and then the lsmod command was showing this time, but my wireless is still not working.

There are at least three different wireless drivers for broadcom cards at present.

None of them work with all of the range of broadcom cards.

The first thing we must do is find out exactly what sort of card you have.

If you open a terminal and run the command:

lspci -k

It will produce a list of all the hardware on your machine and what, if anything is trying to work with it.

If you copy and paste back just the parts that are obviously to do with networking someone should be in a better position to help you.

is your wireless device. There really wasn't any need to post the rest of it.

The output also appears to be cut short as it doesn't go as far as listing the kernel driver in use as it does for the other devices.

Briefly, if when you run the command again, it shows the "brcmsmac" drive in use and you still don't get wireless networks in NetworkManager then there are two things to try.

Firstly, use NetworkManager to disable and then enable wireless and see if that makes a difference. There is a problem in F17 at the moment that that cures. I was not aware that it was so in F16 but it's worth trying.

If that doesn't fix it probably best to try the broadcom-wl driver as that also reckons to support your card.

To do that, install the rpmfusion repositories as described here:

http://rpmfusion.org/

and then use the command:

yum install kmod-wl

and see if the replacement driver works any differently.

If that's not the case then we'll have to investigate deeper and see if anything in the installation is blocking the wireless.

I see that you are using Windows to post questions.

If that means that you can't get internet access to the Fedora installation, post back. There is a way to download the relevant rpm files, transfer them to the Fedora machine and then install them locally.

As I read your output, the "r8169" module that RHamel mentions is for your wired ethernet device. I wasn't aware that it interfered with wireless devices but it might be worth a try.
