Question Ok ... but ... why?

By way of confession, and to start the discussion, I'll state right here at the top of it, that so far, F17 has pretty much been a yawn-fest here in Dan's dank lair. Admittedly I've only installed to bare metal on an older 32 biit barton core AMD Athlon(tm) XP 3200+ coupled to a 20g PATA HDD, with an Nvidia NV34 [GeForce FX 5200] vid-card, stabbed into an MSI MS-7051. Not exactly a barn burner. But .. that's kind of the point. This ain't a high end box. With most folks making do with less these days, I'm betting it's not a unique situation.

The video card being black-listed due to a massively skunked-up nouveau driver problem, means fallback mode is as far as that pony is going to go. The complete lack of available 173xx Nvidia drivers in the RPM-fusion repos pretty much rounds out the eye-candy/special interface magic fail chain. In short ... a substandard experience. Add to that the whole scale orphaning of many of the packages I normally use ...

And ... what's left?

Uhm ... Yeah. That's pretty much the conclusion I came to as well. Not a helluvalotuva reason to upgrade from F16. Or from F14, for that matter.

Which begged the question ... just what is the special magic that beckons in F17? Why upgrade? To quote that old lady in the 1980s Wendy's commercial ... Where's the beef?

I'm willing to be convinced. Really, I am. Just tell me what this release offers us, that's new and special ... besides a corn-dog of a release name, and beta wallpaper that looks suspiciously like a screengrab from an old Windows 3.1 screensaver?

Because there's a schedule to be kept?

I was gosh-darn thrilled to be getting rid of ConsoleKit, until one day I noticed it had been installed as a dependency of lxappearance. So much for that dream...

Re: Ok ... but ... why?

I guess the same could (and has) been said for every new version of Fedora. It's probably been a good half-dozen releases since I downloaded, installed and got the "wow factor". That said, I keep slapping in the DVD's for the latest and within a week or two, it's all I use, leaving the previous version and all the competition to collect dust on stale partitions.

Re: Ok ... but ... why?

It has Gimp 2.8 (single window mode) and the latest Libre Office which also niced up.
The wallpaper is a bit mediocre to say the least (it needs some after effects like extra sparkle).
Unlike the one from Verne I can see it go pretty quickly but maybe that is just because of me favoring a time dependable one.
Furthermore I hope that the shell runs a bit faster.

wait for Gnome4. you'll get nothing new an exciting in Gnome3 . better off to use XFCE IMO . but from wehat i have seen/read systemd is improving but still has a long way to go before its completely finished.

Re: Ok ... but ... why?

Single window mode GIMP? <....> Ayuck! Not a big selling point here. When it comes to the GIMP, I'm a decided and deliberate creature of habit. Neither is a faster running shell -- especially when the shell won't run at all. <....>

I actually like the wallpaper to some extent. It doesn't match that creative snap of, say, FC6, but it easily beats the bloody blue bubbles out of the default wallpaper in F16/Verne, or that hideous mess of vertical bars in F15. <....>

Haven't noticed any jazzing-up of LibreOffice. I don't think it was in the default LiveCD install. Guess I'd better boot that thing back up and install it and give it a look.

How about the fact that people with graphic card that don't have acceleration now can get the shell or those that run it in a VM. across a network also have the shell.
firewalld ??

OK. I suppose that might be a plus. Doesn't help me much here, though. My card is blacklisted, and no Nvidia drivers. <....>

There's a lot of that around here.

My name is Dan, and I use fedora. <....>

Who knows. I may even try to install that bug-ugly Nvidia blob from their site in a console. That should break this install quite nicely.

Can't you go to http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html and download ?

I prefer to install the Nvidia blob. No waiting for someone to package it for me.

Could you be more specific about which packages F17 is lacking? I guess I could always install in a VM and see for myself......
