Stepped up to Xfce
Coming from Debian 6 with Gnome 2, no complaints. It's a great solid distro, but a little dated.
Gnome 3 is not a good fit for me, so I was looking at Xfce. I really like F16 Xfce, the only problem was Scribus would not function properly (an application I need).
I am happy to say, the image export bug in Scribus is fixed. And I am enjoying a great distro ( F16 Xfce)
Good to be back, my introduction to GNU/Linux was Redhat and Yellow dog.
Anyone thinking of letting Gnome 2 go, I would highly recommend F16 Xfce

Re: Stepped up to Xfce
I'm about to install Linux on my new* notebook and have been tossing up whether to go with SL6 again or something newer.
I might give F16 XFCE a go - my notebook installations are usually pretty simple - I don't tailor them as much as I do with my main workstation.
* Second-hand off eBay, but new for me.

Re: Stepped up to Xfce
I'm using F16 and Xfce as well
I was rly pissed with the new gnome (s)hell and tried cinnamon, wich is pretty solid too but is currently in discussion.
I switched to Xfce and was amazed everyone is talking about kde, gnome and others instead of Xfce, the developers need more attention and confirmation their DE is very useful and needed
I'm looking forward to Xfce 4.10.
cheers

Re: Stepped up to Xfce
I'm using F17 with Xfce 4.10 (from the fedora-xfce-4.10 repo). It's pretty stable.
Another day GIMP crashed here and soon the bug was fixed but I suppose these things are expected in a pre-release.
BTW, the F17-beta Xfce live-CD (Xfce 4.8) is pretty good already. Only auto-mount doesn't work but maybe that's an upstream bug (running the GNOME service for that works around the issue).

Re: Stepped up to Xfce
thanks for the infos secipolla,
I'll try F17 with 4.10, even though the final release of F17 is only a few weeks away I'll take vm-vb for that.
btw: is there anything I have to be careful with installing 4.10 on F17?

Re: Stepped up to Xfce
I've been switching desktops like a a maniac, however I'm having a tough time choosing between xfce and lxde. xfce is showing early symptoms of 'the bloat' and we know where that leads. A few little nits in lxde are tough to figure out. There i a certain "batteries not included" sense to lxde, but there are really only a handful of one-time issues.

yeah, I'm using Xfce on my desktop and lxde on my laptop.
what do you exactly mean with "early symptoms of 'the bloat'", I don't have any "bloat-issues" with Xfce.
btw: for anyone who want's to try version 4.10:

Very good observation. I've also sensed this gnomish trend since maybe last year, or earlier. And it's worthy of our concern...
Perhaps it's time to give LXDE a serious try. I dipped a bit into it after a brainwash session presentation by one of its devs at a Linux user group meet, back when it just first came out. I considered incomplete and mostly forgot about it since.

The missus and I both use F16 with XFCE. She is an accountant and switched from Windows to Linux XFCE without a hiccup.

+1
I am checking out ways to support the Xfce environment.
And too, on the sense of beginnings of bloat, It appears to me due to a mix of Gnome applications and Xfce applications in a given spin. Compared to other GNU/Linux distros, Fedora (to me) does the best blend of applications for DE speed and ease of use.

Note that even Linus himself is using Fedora and XFCE.

[Soap Box]
I don't see it as a "right" choice. To me it's a choice that's right for your circumstances. Fedora/XFCE will suit many people, but by no means everyone. The thing I like most about Linux is choice.
