This is a fresh install, and the first user created has the problem. Turns out that root does not have a problem. My first thought was that it was related to selinux, nope, not that.
Seems that it is possible for gthumb to simply not work for some users. Have not yet figured out what the trigger point is for making it work or not. These guys had the same issue.

OK, so how did I fix it? Well, after I figured out that there was a bad setting in one of the configruation settings, I did the following:
- Changed my home directory
- Logout and then login (to knew home directory)
- Copy many of the "." directories from the new home directory to the old one
- Change my home directory back
- Logout and then login
And now it all works just fine. Unclear what item was left in a bad state. I had tried regenerating many of the dot files, this was more of a nuclear explosion type solution. and.... it worked.
